My 2 year old struggles with language. Really struggles. And has an intense "in your face" personality. He makes getting through the day very hard sometimes. Screaming. Tantrums. Hitting. Hair pulling. Just basically not understanding what he needs. There is probably some entrenched power struggles going on as well as he is a fair bit more manageable for my spouse.

And yet, here he is, leaning on my shoulder, stroking my hand and quietly watching TV. Which is why I keep him.

Potential organ donor.

Powerful blog post. Well said. I've been there, and your words just explained feelings I was never able to pull into a cohesive thought.

What about signing? Would he respond well to learning to sign? I hear it's the way to go for language issues and easing the frustration of not being understood. I thought it was trendy hipster parent garbage but I'm becoming more open to the idea that it's actually a useful tool.

It is, but we've tried (and so has daycare), and the only sign he's picked up is "more".

Little B struggled with language as well. While he is an easy-going child, some of his tantrums left me totally drained. Even by the time he was three, his vocalization skills were such that everyone still had to ask me what he was saying. I felt like I should just have a pack of flashcards with pictures of everyday objects and then I could just have him point to what he wanted.

Have you read Never Let Me Go? Not a parenting book, just a novel that I loved.

my girlfriend uses flash cards with her son who has delayed speach. just a few basic ones that he carries in a holder on a lanyard. water, potty, apple, teddy, hug. at home they have about 10 laid out on a table that he can grab and show. it has helped tons. her son is slightly older - just turned 3. but its worth a shot.
