Sweet mother of God. My mother has been hauled off to jail. Turns out she spent the night there a few weeks ago, too. It seems this latest trip is because she blew off a court date for the previous stay. No one is going to bail her out. She's burned those bridges. My youngest brother was her last cash cow, and she was draining his checking account without his permission, and overdrawing it. He is leaving, hopefully for good, to stay with his dad's family out of state. I have a policy to never, ever, under any circumstances, no matter how dire, to give my mother money. I haven't broken it yet, and don't plan to.

But GirlWho overheard the phone conversation. She didn't seem too surprised to hear that Grandma is in the pokey.

Your mother sounds a lot like mine before she got clean.

My mom's been clean for 20 years. She's just more sober than she used to be. All the other behavior is the same.

I was fortunate that once she got completely clean and sober the overall behavior improved too. It happened to late for our relationship to really be salvaged but she is a phenomenal grandmother. I sometimes wonder if she goes above and beyond with me and my brother's kids as some sort of atonement for not being what she should have to us.

Dude, that sucks. I am glad you can do what's best for you and your family, but I cannot imagine that kind of stress. I'm sorry. I'm sorry to Kiwi too.

Hey, my brother fits this mold, too. Thankfully he doesn't have kids. His wife tossed him out because he was toking up behind her back, so now he's living with us.

Oh man, Mamawho, I'm so sorry. What a shitty situation.

I haven't heard a peep yet. Guess that means my brother hasn't heard anything yet. Maybe she called one of her biker friends to spring her. She has a biker nickname now, too. It's all so eyerollingly redneck. It's funny when you consider that we were raised, by the same woman, to be well-bred ladies who lunched at the club. I fell a few pickle forks shy of that, too, but at least I'm not posing with a bottle of Tequila Rose on Facebook.

A few years ago I would have been all upset and angsty. I'm strangely un-upset. Huh. Irritated, maybe. But not freaking out.

I'm sorry that your mom is doing this to herself, and I'm sure I can't understand what has happened in her life that has led her down this road, but I wish her luck.

Having said that...

I'm proud to know you. You have worked hard to protect yourself and your daughter from dangerous and negative influences. Keep it up.

I am really trying to find something comforting to write...but can't . Damn. Sometimes the grown ups just suck.
