Every so often a movie is about to come out that I know without a doubt that I’m going to like. Right now that movie is Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World.

You might have heard about Scott Pilgrim, but you probably didn’t know that it’s based on a series of graphic novels. As a regular attendee of various Comic Cons, the Scott Pilgrim books had been on my radar for a few years even though I hadn’t read them. About four and a half years ago*, I heard that Edgar Wright was working on turning it into a movie. You know, that genius fanboy creator of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Spaced? This motivated me to pick up Volume #1 of the series. And I’m glad that I did.

Scott Pilgrim is a joyous celebration of all things geeky. Scott Pilgrim himself is an ubergeek with a bad haircut. He lacks direction but plays in a band. The band isn’t very good but that doesn’t matter. He’s got geeky friends and they share geeky interests like video games and music. But what’s really geeky about Scott Pilgrim is harder to describe.

The world of Scott Pilgrim is completely bat shit crazy…but in a really cool way. Things are ordinary one minute and then a character will enter into a cross dimensional wormhole. Street Fighter-esque super powered fights break out all of the time. People can earn extra lives. It’s like Japanese manga had sex with a video game and had an 8 bit baby. Best of all, none of the characters in the books react to any of this as anything other than completely normal.

You see the story of Scott Pilgrim is a well-worn tale that’s been told countless times before. Boy meets girl. Boy falls for girl. Boy must defeat girl’s seven evil exes in battle. I know. It’s run of the mill stuff. But trust me on this one. Despite being printed in black and white, the graphic novels are bright and colorful (yet another impossibly cool thing about the series). It’s funny, hip, irreverent and best of all, it has a heart and soul.

Edgar Wright is the perfect creative vision for this movie. If anyone would understand what would make this fantastically warped world work on screen, he will. Wright has assembled a cool cast to bring these characters to life, starting with Michael Cera as Scott. Michael Cera = geeky cool. Yes, Michael Cera as an action hero! That’s the genius of Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World.

I was on board before a single frame of the movie was even shot. Upon seeing the first trailer, I knew that Wright nailed it.

The sixth and final volume of the Scott Pilgrim series was released a few weeks ago. The movie comes out a few weeks from now. If you haven’t read the comics, I suggest picking them up and finding some place quiet and comfortable so you can immerse yourself into the awesome world of Scott Pilgrim. Then go check out the flick. Your inner geek will not be disappointed.

*Yes, it takes that long to make a movie.

I don't know how I feel about the novel and movie having different endings. I really can't stand how Hollywood makes changes to stories just because they can. I know the last novel wasn't finished in time for the movie but it still bothers me.

I think it depends on why the changes were made and who's making them. WATCHMEN for instance had a "controversial" change at the end of the movie, which in my opinion made more sense than the graphic novel.

In the case of Scott Pilgrim, Bryan O'Malley was still working on the last few books when they were writing the movie. I understand the filmmakers worked with O'Malley and got his blessing on the new direction. I trust the creative vision behind this flick and think they'll do a good job with it.

Edgar Wright does do great work and it will probably end up being an amazing picture. I just fear change and Hollywood has raped most of my childhood memories with their interpretations.

"It’s like Japanese manga had sex with a video game and had an 8 bit baby." That the best description for Scott Pilgrim that I've ever seen! I've only read the first couple of books, and can't wait for the film.
