I wasn't a fan of mandatory romance...until PF proposed on Valentine's Day and then we got married on NYE's just to make sure we have a reason to celebrate...the key is to get a terminally romantic partner and holidays take care of themselves.

I've never been a big fan of New Year's. The forced gaiety gets to me. The best ones have been spent sitting in front of the TV with some snacks and some drinks watching movies. Now that we can get Eastern feeds, I can watch the ball drop in New York at 9 pm and head off to bed whenever I want!

My last attempt at a big NYE, was in 2005 when I shelled out big bucks for a large New Year's Eve Extravaganza! Stood in line to get in for over an hour, the place had 4 bartenders (for a crown in the thousands). Stood in line for another 40 minutes, including the stroke of midnight, trying to get my first drink. I never made it. The crowd was pushing so hard, the closer I got to the bar, the harder it was to breathe. We bailed.

We walked down to a pizza joint and shared a couple of slices at Pizza Love, then walked to a dingy bar and ordered to little airplane sized bottles of cheap bubbly. It was actually kind of fun by then.

Now, we have friends that have a party every year. It's the same 5 couples and it's usually a lot of fun.

And now I know where to go for a nice chilly NYE. Here's hoping it won't rain!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who's had a lot of NYE letdowns - my least favorite holidays have always been NYE and Halloween, because they're the ones that have expected partying. I'm always the one bugging my friends for a month before to nail down plans, then sitting around waiting for them to call while they go off and have spontaneous fun. I much prefer holidays where all you're expected to do is sit around and eat.

Great post, and so true.

My best NYE was with a friend and a bottle of champagne and a sky FULL of stars on a snowy, deserted golf course in the shadow of Mt. Rainier. No expectations, no fireworks, no Dick Clark. Perfect.

I only had one party-filled NYE. It was snowy and icy in Oklahoma, which means most everyone's plans were scuttled. I ended up at an insane house party at a friend of a friend's. It was almost entirely state and local cops and their wives, several of whom ended up running naked, in the snow, in front of a wall of floor-to-ceiling windows to get to the hot tub. I spent part of the evening wondering who exactly was stopping the drunk drivers, because it seemed most of the cops were at this party.
