This Is Your Wallet On Cars

Cars has been a major presence in my house for quite some time. For a while it felt like the DVD was on auto-play on my TV and I can’t go five feet without stepping on a Cars toy. Ever since the Bean could sit up by himself, he was obsessed with wheels. So it was only natural that…

Super 8 (a personal, yet spoiler free review)

A lot of things ran through my mind as I watched Super 8. The old Amblin logo that kicked off the movie triggered a sensory response in me, as it was meant to do. I thought about my dad and his repeated attempts to bond with me, a kid whom he didn’t completely understand. I wasn’t into sports like he was. I wasn’t really into much of anything for a while. It would be many years before I stopped having panic attacks because of the movies, paving the way for them to become something…

Non-Texters, Let This Be a Lesson To You

As a movie fan, I believe the best way to see a movie is in the theater.  But that's not always easy, especially for us parents who have to deal with the high cost of tickets, snacks and the even higher cost of babysitters.  And when you get there, some douche-nozzle is usually texting away during the flick.

This is why I wish I lived in Austin.  The Alamo Drafthouse is one of the best places to see a movie in the country.  Partly due to stuff like this:

Fast Five on a Friday

I originally didn’t intend to see Fast Five. The fourth one was pretty awful and ruined my appetite for the franchise. But curiously Fast Five started to get decent reviews. And since WonderWife™ had planned on going to sleep very early, having gotten up in the middle of the previous…

Hop Along

I wanted to write a review of Hop this weekend. I had it all planned out too. My tickets were bought and my favorite movie companion was by my side. But as we munched our popcorn, the Bean got a little spooked… Continue

Pool Jumpers

It's been a while since I've posted.  There seemingly hasn't been much exciting about the movies lately.  Even the Oscars were kind of bland.  But as we approach the summer movie season, there will be much to discuss.

In the meantime, check out a trailer that's (ahem) making a splash:

And if there's any upcoming movies…

A State of the Union on 3D Movies

As I sat in the darkened theater, geekily wearing my 3D glasses while waiting for The Green Hornet to start, I couldn’t help but be dismayed at what I saw on the screen: three trailers for three upcoming movies that were all in 3D. Yet none of them wowed me, even once.

It’s with this in mind that I am here to write about the current state of 3D. Sadly, for such a visual medium, things aren’t looking very good. …

An Underwhelming Legacy

When I was in college, my friends and I would often sit around and watch things like early computer animation videos set to electronic music, computer fractal screen savers and Liquid Television. So I was pre-disposed to like a sequel to Tron, in…

Expecting the Unexpected

Part of the fun of being movie-obsessed these days is trying to predict the business of show business. Much like those guys who like sports with their fantasy leagues that I hear so much about, I like to sit around with my friends and discuss movies and box office numbers.

Two movies are coming out on Friday that are generating a lot of talk amongst people who care about these…

How To Have An Important Conversation With Your Kids

This is an issue that many of us will face. I found this PSA both informative and supportive and feel it's my duty as a movie geek to share it with… Continue

Movie Review: Megamind

Every once in a while it seems that there is something in the air that causes two movies with similar concepts to come out during the same year. There was Antz and A Bug’s Life. Volcano and Dante’s Peak. Deep Impact and Armageddon.… Continue

How Do I Talk About Catfish? (spoiler free)

How do I write a review of a movie that I can’t talk about?

The engrossing new documentary Catfish is such a movie. The studio releasing the movie is asking audience members to keep details about it quiet. The tagline for the film is “don’t let anyone tell you what it is." Before I saw it, somebody told me to avoid reading anything about it. I'm very glad that I went into the movie with only the… Continue

Reeling Q&A Part 3: Mediocre Kids Movies

I wanted to take the Bean to a flick this past weekend, but was dismayed that between Piranha 3D and the latest Resident Evil movie, there wasn’t anything new out there for kids. I was unable to talk him into seeing Despicable Me again (I love those Minions), so we ended up playing video games at home instead. If it had been this weekend, we might have ended up seeing the… Continue

I Less Than Three Scott Pilgrim

Every so often a movie is about to come out that I know without a doubt that I’m going to like. Right now that movie is Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World.

You might have heard about Scott Pilgrim, but you probably didn’t know that it’s based on a series of graphic novels. As a regular attendee of various Comic Cons, the… Continue

You're Despicable

Evil and cute are two things that don’t usually go together. Yet in the charming new computer animated movie, Despicable Me, evil and cute go together like chocolate and peanut butter.

The evil in question goes by the name of Gru. He’s a pointy nosed fellow who looks like the love child of Dr. Evil and Uncle Fester. Gru has earned his place in the world by being mean, evil and well, despicable. He’s the kind of guy who will delight… Continue

Toy Story 3 (a spoiler free review)

Ironically, the original Toy Story marks the beginning of my adult life. It came out the summer that I graduated college. I had moved to a new city and was struggling to adjust to a great many things. I have vivid memories of sitting in a theater with my friends on a Saturday afternoon, surrounded by screaming kids and harried parents. But when the lights went down and the movie splashed across the screen, it didn’t matter how old any of us were—the… Continue

Reeling Q&A Part 2: Remakes

When I trolled for questions, one of the things you wanted to know most was: What’s the deal with all of the remakes? Is Hollywood out of ideas?

The simple answer is: yes.

The more complex answer is: yes and no.

With the shiny new version of
The Karate Kid threatening to sweep the leg of audiences, it feels like a perfect time to examine… Continue

Reeling Q&A Part 1: The Easy Ones

Your response to my offer to drop some knowledge on you was fantastic. You asked a lot of great questions and I will get to all of them. Some of them require longer answers, so for now I thought I'd take care of the easy ones right off of the bat:

Dear Reeling

How many times can I watch LOTR before I transition from uber-fan to freak?… Continue

Dropping Some Knowledge

There's a lot of things that I don't know. I grow silent if the conversation turns to politics or sports or science or literature. But I do know movies. Here at the Reeling blog I've shared my thoughts and feelings about movies (and have even given away a few cool things)...whatever has popped into my popcorn addled brain. But now it's your turn. I want to hear from you. So if you have a movie or pop culture related question, send me an email. …

Who Doesn't Love Babies? - An Awesome Offsprung Giveaway

Despite having gone through the process of raising a person from a newborn to a toddler twice, I can honestly say that I am not a baby person. Aside from my own kids, I'm not one of those guys who needs to hold a baby or smell a baby. I know I'm probably in the minority about this. But I do like looking at babies. And after becoming a parent, I've found that I'm totally interested in seeing how other people raise their kids. This is why I'm intrigued by the new documentary… Continue
