One Parent, Two Parents, Three Parents, Four . . .

Sunday's Boston Globe published a great article by Drake Bennett titled "Johnny has two mommies – and four dads," asking, "As complex families proliferate, the law considers: Can a child have more than two parents?"

Good question, and one I've written about a few times before. In… Continue

So That's Who All Those People Running Around My Home Are

A family includes same-sex couples with children, as well as married gay and lesbian couples.

That’s the belief of “a majority of Americans” who now include the above in their definition of family, according to a study by Brian Powell, a sociology professor at Indiana University, Bloomington.

The New York Times has a recent piece about the study and Powell’s new book, Counted Out:…

New Study Finds -- Shock -- Adopted Kids of Lesbian and Gay Parents Doing Just Fine

From the "not that those of us here needed proof, but it's good to have" files, a new study from the University of Virginia has found that the adoptive children of same-sex parents were on average "developing in typical ways."

"We found that children adopted by lesbian and gay couples are thriving," said U.Va. psychology professor Charlotte J. Patterson, who led the study. Her research used standard… Continue

You Mean Someone Still Uses the Term "Paramour"?

"Paramour" is one of those words--like "gout"--that one doesn't expect to hear outside of historical romance novels. Yet a Tennessee court of appeals last week struck down a ruling that used the state’s so-called “paramour clause” to prohibit Angel Chandler’s same-sex partner of over 10 years from spending the night when Chandler’s two children from a…

Teens With Lesbian Parents Better Adjusted than Most

A new report from the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS), the longest-running and largest study of American lesbian families, has found that the 17-year-old children of lesbian mothers, all conceived through donor insemination, "were rated higher than their peers in social, academic, and overall competence, and lower in aggressive behavior, rule-breaking, and social problems, on standardized assessments of psychological adjustment." The… Continue

You're Invited: Blogging for LGBT Families Day

I'd like to invite all of you to participate in the 5th Annual Blogging for LGBT Families Day this Tuesday, June 1. I created the event back in 2006 (yikes, I've been doing this for a while) as a way to share stories and raise awareness about LGBT families.

In brief: Blog (here at Offsprung or on your own blog) about something related to LGBT families on or before June 1, and submit the…

It Takes a Queer Village

And Baby Makes More: Known Donors, Queer Parents, and Our Unexpected Families is a terrific collection of essays that belongs on every LGBT parent's bookshelf, no matter how you created your family. Non-LGBT parents who used donors and anyone who has an interest in families today should also give it a read.

Below is part of a review I wrote about it when it first came out in Canada. I'm pleased to say it has now been released in the U.S—just in time for Mother's (s') Day.…

"Children Are Not Puppies"

Former Arkansas governor and erstwhile Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee shared his opinion about same-sex parents in a speech last week at The College of New Jersey. As reported by The Perspective:

He also affirmed support for a law in Arkansas that prohibits same-sex couples from becoming adoptive or foster parents. “I think this is not about trying to…

Livin' La Vida Papá

I don't often write about celebrities, but it's not often we have a new, out celebrity LGBT parent to add to our list. Unless you've been stuck in an elevator for the last week, you'll know that pop star Ricky Martin, the father of two, has come out as gay. He wrote at his Web site:

Fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially…

Careful with That Turkey Baster!

"If your question is whether two lesbians can, accidentally, spontaneously, impregnate each other, not to my knowledge."

That was UCLA professor Letitia Peplau showing extreme patience while on the stand this week as a plaintiffs' expert in the big marriage equality case in California. She was answering defense lawyer Nicole Moss' question on whether gay couples could "accidentally" have children out of wedlock. (Thanks,… Continue

Scholastic Bans Book with Lesbian Moms from Book Fairs

[Updated: 10/24, 10:40 a.m. ET: Change.org has posted an action alert about this, complete with an easy automated message you can send to Scholastic.] Most of us with young children in public school know about Scholastic Book Fairs. Many of us remember them from our own childhoods. Now comes news that Scholastic has banned a book from the fairs because one of the characters has lesbian… Continue

Montana Supreme Court Gets It

This good news almost makes up for the bad news of my previous post. The Montana Supreme Court last week affirmed a trial court decision granting a “parental interest” to Michelle Kulstad, a lesbian mom who had been co-parenting two children legally adopted only by her ex-partner, Barbara Maniaci. Under state law, the women could not jointly adopt. Maniaci is now married to a man and says she is… Continue

Injustice for Florida Lesbian Mom and Kids

I was going to write a cheery post tonight. Then this happened. I'm spitting nails:

A U.S. District Court in Florida rejected a lawsuit by a lesbian mom who had been kept apart from her partner who lay dying in a Florida hospital. The couple's three children were kept from her as well.

In February 2007, Janice Langbehn and Lisa Pond boarded an R Family cruise, looking forward to vacation with their children. Just before the boat left, however, Pond collapsed… Continue

Ben and Jerry's to Serve "Hubby Hubby" This Month

In honor of the first legal marriages of same-sex couples in Vermont, which begin today, Burlington-based Ben and Jerry's will rename its "Chubby Hubby" flavor to "Hubby Hubby" for the month, reports the AP, via the Rutland Herald.

I had a similar idea when Vermont… Continue

Don't Take Your Lesbian Moms to Hooters

The Canadian musical comedy My Mother's Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, which became the hit of the 2009 Fringe of Toronto Theatre Festival in July, will be expanded for a run beginning Nov. 7 at the Panasonic Theatre in Toronto, reports Playbill News. The new version will include a larger cast and new songs, in addition to the… Continue

A Supremely Ridiculous Argument

Sometimes I read something that is just so mind-blowingly irrational I don't know where to begin.

Robert P. George, in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece titled, "Gay Marriage, Democracy, and the Courts," begins by stating that it would be "disastrous" for the U.S. Supreme Court justices to rule on a federal lawsuit that "has been filed to invalidate traditional marriage laws."… Continue

More than Just Turkey Basters

Welcome (or welcome back) to my parenting blog at Offsprung. I thought I'd start with an introduction.

I'm Dana Rudolph, a lesbian mom living with my partner of 16 years and our six-year-old son. I am currently a full-time mom and part-time writer, editor, and media producer. (Yes, that adds up to more than 100 percent. I don't sleep much.) I write a regular parenting column for several LGBT papers around the country, am a contributing editor for LGBT group blog… Continue
