Welcome (or welcome back) to my parenting blog at Offsprung. I thought I'd start with an introduction.
I'm Dana Rudolph, a lesbian mom living with my partner of 16 years and our six-year-old son. I am currently a full-time mom and part-time writer, editor, and media producer. (Yes, that adds up to more than 100 percent. I don't sleep much.) I write a regular parenting column for several LGBT papers around the country, am a contributing editor for LGBT group blog…

Before we start talking about kids' pop culture, let's take a look at ourselves – the parents – and our strange love/hate relationship with pop culture. Anyone who’s picked up a magazine in the last 50 years or so has at least a vague sense that pop culture – music, television, movies, toys, games,…

-Her first word was a bark. Not "woof", but a grunt that sounds like a bark. She still barks at any animal she sees.
-Her second word was the dog's name.
-I have caught her several times trying to drink out of the dog's water bowl. We had to move it to our bedroom to keep her out of it.
-She carries sticks around the yard for the dog, then chews on them with the dog.

Fill in the blank: Hey! Ho! __________!
I gotta admit that I never really got into the Ramones. I mean, sure, "I Wanna Be Sedated" is a freezer blast of a song (that fill in the blank above is part of the American cultural DNA now), but when I was in high school, I took the geeky route and went for the brainy bands like They Might Be Giants.
Which probably explains why as a parent I'm still going more for the brainy bands like They Might Be Giants for my kids than punk…

Following in the footsteps of Ylime and ks, I decided to get some input on a dress selection. It's not for a super-dressy occasion; it's my boyfriend's mom's 90th birthday party, a daytime event in a church hall. The brown (thanks for the inspiration Ylime) looks like it might be a more flattering cut but the print calls to me.
And shoe suggestions are welcome from you shoe-shoppers out there, with no restrictions on heel height. I definitely don't mind a nice high heel now and…

I have been lurking for too long I am quite embarrised to admit that but I am ready to be present with you all. I am horrible at introducting myself (see profile if you like) but this is my little girl to the left. Look forward to chatting more soon. Oh and I am not Shabazz, I promise. I also am not able to spell so I will apologize for that right now. Thank you so much Alan and Oracle for making the site pretty and keeping us going. I absolutly LUV it here!

I was reading the blog about G-Force. I have to admit, I'm not a big movie person, and even less of a kids' movie fan. But one thing really struck me as I read this blog post - it only holds true for little kids. I don't really have a "little kid" anymore. Ro is still kind of little, he only weighs about 45 lbs, but he's almost 8-years-old. And Ri is nearly as tall as I am. But their height doesn't define their bigness for me, the degree to which they help care for the animals…

This is purely for demonstrative purposes, as I don't think anyone has posted a non-featured blog entry yet. What can I say - I'm a giver. :)

So, how have you been?
I've missed you! Well, most of you. Whether those of you reading this are new to Offsprung or are longtime denizens, I have not, in fact, written a Hausfrau column in many months, and so would like to open our new, weekly (she says, optimistically) conversation with updates and reintroductions. So, welcome -- either back, or for the first time. The Hausfrau blog is all about being OK with being an easily confused and generally overwhelmed parent, and with…

“If you’re good, your mom might give you a popsicle,” said the cop to my four-and-a-half-year-old stepson on the very hot day that he came to take a police report for my stolen credit card.
Then came the inevitable answer:
“She’s not my Mom!”’
Though I blushed, I did not miss a beat.
“I can still give you a popsicle” I shot back.
The police officer, who neither knew nor had previously ascertained whether I actually
had… Continue

Welcome to the new Offsprung and welcome to Reeling. Here, I’m going to be talking about movies, reviewing movies and sometimes complaining about movies. Though today we begin talking about kid flicks, I promise that I won’t be limited to that arena just cause this here is a parenting site.
So what qualifies me to write about movies? I grew up basking in the hot-buttered glow of Lucas and Spielberg. I went to film school and spent many obligatory years behind the counter at a… Continue
