Mmmm.....donuts....

...or, The Intersection of Media and Politics, and How The Internet Is Changing Both. (see, I told you "Mmmm....donuts...." was a catchier title).

Anyhoo. Most of us who are politically literate often find ourselves frustrated with what even Sarah "Not The Sharpest Moose In The Shed" Palin calls the "lamestream media." It's a frustration borne of seemingly a number of different causes, but it's become an astonishingly…

You're Invited: Blogging for LGBT Families Day

I'd like to invite all of you to participate in the 5th Annual Blogging for LGBT Families Day this Tuesday, June 1. I created the event back in 2006 (yikes, I've been doing this for a while) as a way to share stories and raise awareness about LGBT families.

In brief: Blog (here at Offsprung or on your own blog) about something related to LGBT families on or before June 1, and submit the…

S-M-R-T!

Photobucket

Popular opinion may not be fond of “elitists” these days, but we sure do love our winners. Perhaps that explains the incessant mixed messages in pop culture about whether it’s okay to be smart or not. Use big words so nobody can understand you, question things too much = Bad. Act cool and happy like everybody else, but hit…

Let's Talk About Sex...ism

It's things like this that make things like this so important.

What I will never ever understand is parents of boys who think they don't have to talk about sexism, feminism, gender equality and all that stuff to their kids. I mean, it's like they think "Phew! No girls! Don't have to worry about that can of… Continue

Sisterly Love

ok, got a phone call from my sister the other night, she's older, just newly married, and no kids. First she wanted to give me a hard time about us taking the Dbomb down a waterslide (pictures posted on facebook) and how could the Dbomb have liked it (I took pics of her first of like 4 runs down, she was laughing harder each time we went, including when I took her, and we ended up going under) -then she gave me a backhand compliment about my cooking....and finally couldn't believe the Dbomb had… Continue

From Penguins to Lions: New Works by LGBT Children’s Book Authors

(Yep, another book review. This time, two for the kiddies.)

The authors of two of the most famous LGBT children’s books have two new books out. Neither work has an overt LGBT theme this time, but both center on issues of love and family that should give them wide appeal both within and outside the LGBT community.

Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell, authors of And Tango Makes Three, about two… Continue

The Mental Escape Artist

It's 10am and I'm already thinking about 9pm tonight. That's when the kids will be asleep, my husband will be headed to bed, and I will be alone with the computer. With Dexter, specifically. I'm halfway through the second season of the show on Netflix.

Lately I've noticed myself spending a lot of time thinking about Dexter. While I'm driving to pick up kids from school, while I'm pushing them on the swing, while I make dinner. I look like I'm focused on the task at hand but really I'm… Continue

“Play Enjoyed By All”

Photobucket

I have a love/eye-roll relationship with theater. It’s something I aspired to as a girl, had some moderate success with in high school and college, and then just sort of stuffed under the bed in mild embarrassment for most of my adult life. It’s quite an experience to pour all that energy and passion into all those Waiting for Guffmanish endeavors,… Continue

How Awesome

How awesome is it that out of 24 PhD students walking in this year's departmental commencement ceremony, twelve of us were women - and seven of us were mothers? Going out to attend the ceremony, I knew that at least one other mother would be there, but then I saw another toddler, and another baby, and another one - and heard about still more who weren't attending in person. Back when I started the program, there was zero information about parenting as a grad student. All we really heard on the… Continue

Finally....

spring has sprung, at least for a day or so, just in time for the D to get another tooth-it seems like the teeth are getting a tad bit easier for her, this one just sort of appeared-we knew something was brewing, in that her drool had hit predator status sans the acid, which is good, as we have wood floors-

Happy IDAHO!

Darn it. It's already more than half over and I haven't yet wished you all a very Happy IDAHO! (International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia)

So here's to it.

And in honor of this weekend's Great Global Kiss-In, please enjoy the following video -- which includes a particularly sexy man speaking French *swoon*… Continue

No Longer Part of GOP, Charlie Crist Feels No Need To Be A Vindictive Jerk

Whaddaya know:

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is leaning strongly toward vetoing a bill that would require women to get an ultrasound before terminating a pregnancy. In an interview with the Tampa Tribune, Crist called the measure "mean-spirited," saying there's "not a whole lot" stopping him from opposing it. This would be Crist's second veto…

Killer Be Killed

The past several months have not been kind to various non-humans who reside(d) in the Haus. I will eventually discuss some of our feline tragedies, but our first tale of woe concerns Killer, the hermit crab Crazy Gabi gave The Heir for Christmas.

Longtime Offsprungers might remember Crazy Gabi, my parents' next door neighbor who gave us rabies in the summer of 2006. A brief overview for those of you who don't recall this particular highlight of my parenting adventure: Since my parents,… Continue

Defining Terms

My first post said this blog will talk about "race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, ability, body type,

religion, education, class, buck teeth and whatever other bias-related issues you want to bring up, as they affect our parenting and our relationships and our lives in general."

Put another way, we're here to talk about "bias, -isms, discrimination, bigotry, chauvinism, intolerance, narrow-mindedness,… Continue

Reeling Q&A Part 1: The Easy Ones

Your response to my offer to drop some knowledge on you was fantastic. You asked a lot of great questions and I will get to all of them. Some of them require longer answers, so for now I thought I'd take care of the easy ones right off of the bat:

Dear Reeling

How many times can I watch LOTR before I transition from uber-fan to freak?… Continue

Byron Dorgan SLAMS Financial Reform, Calls For Stronger Regs.

Watch it here.

Hellz yes, Byron. You go get 'em: 100% correct.

Why IS it, though, that these guys - both parties, the Democrats are only slightly less susceptible to it - only sound like this, like populist, pro-consumer barn-burners, after they've announced they'll not run again?…

GrrrrrrrrrrrAnimals!

Animal themed products this week that will delight and mystify. First up, Sock Monkeys!

This may be a little too much sock monkey for me, but I never really trusted the sock monkey. Those flat, dead eyes and slightly smiling lips kinda creep me out. Maybe that baby…
