Spring, seriously....?

ok, this is getting old....I know I moved from Virginia to Colorado to escape the humidity (and my family, but that's a story only to be told over a lot of beer) which was a good decision, it was, but I think I missed the memo about our furnance staying on until JUNE. I know, could be worse, I could be living further in the mountains, still digging out my drive...Aspen, Vail, Snowmass, under a winter storm warning until tomorrow-MAY people, its MAY.....

I just need to whine, cause I…

Cholecystomancy: Or the Blog Post Where I Talk All About Myself.

So, dear readers, how’s tricks? I apologize profusely for my long absence, but I’ve been busy having sharp instruments poked into me and having organs and whatnot removed. I could tell you the short story, but that’s

not nearly as fun. So let’s use my now

dead-as-a-mackerel gallbladder and I’ll tell you a story. Come closer to my table. Don’t fear.

Here, look, a…

Yoga Tough Love

Dear Alternadad:

Is there any point to Mommy and Baby Yoga, for the baby?

Yoga Mommy

Dear Yoga Mommy:

There are few yoga clichés I hate more than "kids are natural yogis." While its true that kids are generally more flexible and open-minded than adults, that doesn't make them "natural"… Continue

Teacher Tom's blog post on Dangerism got me thinking about lists after he posted a link to 5 dangerous things for kids to try. It's a good… Continue

How hard is it to say thank you?

Its not a complicated combo of words, very simple, easy, to say, write, acknowledge that you made a geniuine effort to provide them with the information they needed from you in a timely manner. But it seems in these days, of texting, emailing, shortcuts, that those 2 little words have been DELETED from the English language.

Aryanzona

By now, unless you've been excavating yourself from under a mountain of dirty laundry or hiking the Himalayas for the past week, you've heard about Arizona's new immigration law, signed late Friday by the Republican governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer. Ms. Brewer initially gave off a distinct whiff of not wanting to be seen as having taken the wrong side in this fight by waiting… Continue

Bingo Is Not, Apparently, My Name-O

Those of you who know me, either on Offsprung or in the alt-verse (where Jack has a son and Ben is a high school history teacher), know that I intend to live to be 120 years old. I plan to emulate my hero, Jeanne Calment, formerly of France, currently of heaven, who died at age 122. I don't feel the need to share the longest-lived crown with Ms. Calment, being that she's my hero and all, and so am content to fall a couple of years short. In all honesty, though, if I make it to 121, I… Continue

I may be nomadic . . .

. . because I'm itching to move again. I like it here, but damn it's expensive. I can't see trying to buy a house here. DaddyWho made the final cut for a job in Minnesota and also in Miami, where I really don't want to live. But he's also on the short list for a job in San Antonio. I've lived there twice, and bitched the whole time. I used to have to drive DW to his appointments and surgeries there. I was heavily pregnant there, in late summer. Not great memories. But I'm strangely excited…

Dangerism

While I continue to envy preschools with the good fortune to be located within or adjacent to a tract of the natural world in which their children can hike and explore, the advantage of an urban location is the ability to easily take the bus to places we want to go.…

Happy Armed Insurrection Day

Today is April 19th. On this day in history, Joan of Arc was beatified (1909), Mae West was sentenced to 10 days in jail for obscenity for her play Sex (1927), the 125th (and final) section of the Oxford English Dictionary was published (1928), Shirley Temple appeared in her first movie (Stand up and Cheer, 1934), Rogers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" debuted on Broadway (1945), Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier (1956), and Sally Ride was announced as the first woman astronaut (1982). Ashley… Continue

Selling It

In my online jaunts to search for tots' tackle, I've noticed something: Sometimes an item that seems perfectly reasonable -- dare I say even a good product -- will be undercut by the description and sales pitch, thereby making it fodder for this space. I give you this week's examples:

Who Doesn't Love Babies? - An Awesome Offsprung Giveaway

Despite having gone through the process of raising a person from a newborn to a toddler twice, I can honestly say that I am not a baby person. Aside from my own kids, I'm not one of those guys who needs to hold a baby or smell a baby. I know I'm probably in the minority about this. But I do like looking at babies. And after becoming a parent, I've found that I'm totally interested in seeing how other people raise their kids. This is why I'm intrigued by the new documentary… Continue

Power to the Kids’ Table!

Who’s ready for a little “Goofus and Gallant” action, here? Gallant first:

I just finished writing a nice little article about nutrition for Little Girl’s preschool newsletter. I’m not much of an expert on the topic myself, but I was writing about Cynthia Lair,… Continue

The Dad Who Cried Wolf

I consider myself lucky. I live in a nice neighborhood where there are nice playgrounds and nice schools. Not much happens around these parts save for a few mommy's who sometimes get their hair all in knots just because the housekeeper didn't sweep behind the piano. Other than that, life here is uneventful. That is, until today. After picking up my 1st grader from school we did the normal play on the playground before heading home. It was a gorgeous afternoon and like…

Welcome To The Diaper Pail! Today, The F-Word...

The F Word? Yes. Because although it might be prudent for my first post to go with something nice and warmly non-controversial like congratulating the President on the recent nuclear deal with Russia, I've just never been one to go the easy path. So I thought I'd start out with a bang. Heh.

But before we get started with that, let me introduce myself. If you get new-member announcements, or haunt the member section, you'll have already heard this, but if not,…

"Children Are Not Puppies"

Former Arkansas governor and erstwhile Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee shared his opinion about same-sex parents in a speech last week at The College of New Jersey. As reported by The Perspective:

He also affirmed support for a law in Arkansas that prohibits same-sex couples from becoming adoptive or foster parents. “I think this is not about trying to…

Rating pain

As The Oracle mentioned in a recent post, medical professionals will often ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 1 to 10, one being no pain and ten being pure agony. I find this helpful because pain is very subjective - there's no way to measure it in absolute terms, so a 4 for you may be a 7 for me. But still, it's my 7 and I want some relief.

When my daughter was in the worst of her medical crisis two years ago, she would frequently give a 9 or a 10 and it would break…

Richly Garbed

Welcome to the relaunch of Offsprung's product blog! The original Meconium, written by this guy way back when, had the following mission:

Your baby comes into this world with nothing, and the world then attempts to overcompensate by offering an unending parade of crap, causing the dreaded Babies R Us Breakdown. Should you purchase the new stroller with… Continue
