Stroller Coaster

Ah, strollers . . .

Yes, yes, we’re not supposed to like Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character in that movie. They did a nice job synthesizing all the sanctimommiest parenting-message-board attitudes into one character there, and I have to admit I enjoyed it. We’ve all been on the receiving end of sanctimommy judgment at some point, haven’t we? I’ve had two c-sections, myself. I know all about it.

Still, I’ve never been a big fan of strollers. I came into… Continue

What did you do over the weekend? Oh Me? I had a baby!

Finley Jack was born at 8:06 am on Friday January 22nd. He weighed 6lb 10oz and is 20.5 inches long. Holy crow is this one small little baby. His brothers (who were both 8.5 lbs at birth) and the cats look giant.

We got to come home today (my 28th birthday) and this baby is the best birthday present ever! He's so sweet and mellow.

TMI Alert, go no further if you don't want… Continue

On the other side of the river

Two days before the New Year, my almost five-year old son, my sister, my brother and my parents were tooling along the interstate toward San Antonio from Atlanta, on the way to my uncle's wedding in a rented van, smug with our decision to save on airfare and baggages fees, high off of gas station colas and candy bars.

It was after we crossed the Mississippi when I realized: I was fifteen again, in my family’s minivan of old, on the way to a holiday get together, headphones in my ears… Continue

Our Unplanned Vacation in South Dakota, Part III

[continued from Parts I and II; this is the third part in a four-part series]

So I set about righting everything I could. As the gear dried in the South Dakota sun, I found the dishpan, took it into the bathroom, and filled it with dish soap and water. We still had dirty dishes from the interrupted dinner of the previous… Continue

I put my foot down, dammit.

Let me start by saying I love my husband and my kids very much. Very, very, very much.

Hubby is a wonderful man, very smart, funny, cute. We have amazing conversations and I learn something new either about him or from him at least once a week. He teaches me things and appreciates what knowledge I have to offer him in return. He is a talented musician, conductor, and composer, and is well-respected by his peers, students, and fans. But man, he just sucks ass at housework and… Continue

Careful with That Turkey Baster!

"If your question is whether two lesbians can, accidentally, spontaneously, impregnate each other, not to my knowledge."

That was UCLA professor Letitia Peplau showing extreme patience while on the stand this week as a plaintiffs' expert in the big marriage equality case in California. She was answering defense lawyer Nicole Moss' question on whether gay couples could "accidentally" have children out of wedlock. (Thanks,… Continue

What is it About Whole Foods?

Photobucket

Driving by Whole Foods the other day, I was suddenly overcome with two strange, near simultaneous pangs of longing: 1) Wishing I could go in and shop, and 2) Missing my son’s baby days.

Those two thoughts aren’t as unrelated as they seem. Whole Foods and, to a greater extent, Seattle’s PCC were a… Continue

Our Unplanned Vacation in South Dakota, Part II

[continued from Part I]

The drive from Custer State Park into town was demoralizing. All of the kids cried, but Thing One was inconsolable. She cried long after the other two had stopped. “How are we supposed to do this if anything can happen at any time?” she asked.

I said, “It will get easier,” but I wasn’t sure it would. In town, we stayed in the Custer Motel, a cute and… Continue

Frickin' Facebook

I just found my mortal enemy on FB. He is a friend of a friend of mine - no surprise, we had a number of small seminar classes together in college. He's a fan of Sarah Palin. He's one of those homeschool kids that give perfectly wonderful homeschooled kids and their families a bad name. His mother objected to my being in one of our honors courses, because I was older, married, and possibly a corrupting influence as we were talking about some risque subjects - secular art. Did I mention that… Continue

Our Unplanned Vacation in South Dakota

By the time we pulled into the Hampton Inn in, Sioux Falls, South Dakota the Things Three and I were exhausted, and run down. We were only ten days into our around-the-country road trip, and already we’d run into problems. The first problems arose almost immediately, but seemed easy enough to overcome. It started when Thing One, just two days into the adventure, fell ill with a stomach virus, and couldn’t hold anything much down for 36 hours. We spent a few days in Montana with Friend One… Continue
