Yes, my son plays with dolls.

Do any of you fine folk have recommendations on where to find a doll for my little guy?  He goes straight for one particular doll in the church nursery every time we're there--he's named it, cradles it gently, kisses its "boo-boos," and was desperate yesterday because "Baby Audrey" was hungry and he didn't know where her milk was.  (We improvised one of those big interlocking plastic beads into a bottle and he cooked her some lunch in the toy kitchen.)  He pushes her around in a stroller and is…See More

Profile Information

About Me:
I'm a biologist turned engineering tech during the week and a fourteenth-century nursemaid on the weekends. Irritatingly young and waiting to grow out of it, happily geeky, fashion-challenged, sarcastic, and the eternal pessimist. What isn't there to love?
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
His smile and his laugh. He's been dubbed the happiest baby ever by family, friends, and random people on the street.
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
Ignoring fathers. Yes, I know not every family includes a man, but that doesn't seem to be a very good reason to treat the guys who are involved as lesser parents.
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
A person who wanted to be a parent. Before that, a person who by no means wanted to have children. Before that, a child.
What are you nerdy about?
Cells and viruses. Living history. Books. Sci-fi. Jeeps. Plants. Spaceships. The coming zombie apocalypse.
Favorite music/books/TV/movies:
Music: Blindside, TruthBeKnown, Falling Cycle, Nodes of Ranvier, Metallica.
Books: Hitchhiker's Guide, the Deathgate Chronicles, Ender's Game, Mistborn, Outlaws of Sherwood, Melanie Rawn's Ambrai and Dragon Prince books, and most anything by David Weber, Terry Brooks, Shakespeare, or Poe.
TV: Invader Zim, Firefly, Battlestar Galactica. Is there anything good they haven't already taken off the air?
Movies: The Matrix, Donnie Darko, Pirates of the Caribbean, Princess Bride, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Bourne Identity, Knight's Tale.

Finding healing

Posted on January 27, 2012 at 7:54pm 7 Comments

Most of you know that I've lost a few pregnancies, some that I've posted about here and some that I haven't.  I should be over it by now, and I know it.  Instead, I still find myself freaking out for no reason.  I'll be reading through a craft book, see something with a child's drawing on it, and have a panic attack.  I mean, trouble breathing, shaking, the works.  My mind keeps running in circles and telling me that I'll never have a child--everyone else has children, why can't I, when I'd…

Me, whining

Posted on November 30, 2011 at 3:30pm 10 Comments

My mom and I are complete opposites in many ways, which tends to cause conflict.  She likes to remain ignorant of any potential unhappiness until it's already engulfed her.  I, on the other hand, prefer to know as far in advance as possible so that I can get all my worrying done ahead of time.  That way, when the bad times come, I'll have gotten the panicking out of the way and have gathered enough information to confront the issues head-on.

This, however, is not about my…

Bring on the tears

Posted on September 26, 2011 at 12:59pm 26 Comments

Lots of crying today.  Happy crying, grumpy crying, spilled-milk crying...just crying.  I've been kind of hyper-emotional lately.

The crying over spilled milk (okay, iced tea, but still) is kind of self-explanatory.

The grumpy crying is over wanting to call various dear friends and have them squeal over the phone and be happy for me.  At least I got to call my midwife, who did indeed squeal and dance around her living room.

So yeah, you know…

A letter that will never be sent

Posted on September 13, 2011 at 3:48pm 8 Comments

Dear Mom,

I am not the appropriate person to unload to about how much my father sucks.  I lived with, and largely in fear of, the man for 18 years.  Unlike you, I did not choose to be in that situation.  Go complain to your friends.  Go get divorced.  I don't care.  Just because I am by far the most mature person in our family (scary, that) does not mean I can be your biweekly emotional support.

While we're on this topic, I really didn't need to know that he…

The "OMGsquee! I have a one-year-old!" post

Posted on October 13, 2010 at 6:31am 11 Comments

My baby is an autumn baby.

His hair is the color of straw, shining and sweet-smelling. His eyes are the color of the sky under which he was born--not the pale, hopeful blue of spring or the rich, lazy blue of summer, but a deep cobalt, shot through with pewter, pale storm clouds of grey gathering around the pupils. When he smiles, which is often, the skin around those eyes and the button nose below them crinkle. He has his mama's grin.

My baby is not ahead, or…
