It seems like all my six-year-old does lately is whine about what we're not doing. Right now it is going for a picnic. We did this a lot over the summer and she must have really enjoyed them. I've…Continue

"I don't think I could *ever* buy, eat, or hand out sugar-free candy. Anything I've ever tried that was sugar-free tasted terrible. I do have a sweet tooth, but try to stick to Michael Pollan's rule: Eat as much junk food as you want…"

Fitting In

In Montana, where I grew up, it is considered quite normal to be a hunting and fishing type of family. Most of my classmates, even the girls, had shot at or killed a deer by the time they were 15. Skiing is the other big thing. There's so much snow, you're just expected to be out their flinging yourself down it. My family was never much into this stuff. We tried skiing but it turned out I am afraid of heights. None of us had any inclination to shoot at any wild animals. Fishing was fine but…See More

Profile Information

About Me:
I'm a mom of two crazy kids, an avid reader and blogger and nanny extraordinaire. I love to bake and I cry at sad movies, every single time.
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
They are really healthy, normal kids and always have been. I want to make sure I never take that for granted.
What's your most recent kid-related public humiliation?
I let a purse-thief into my son's preschool! Stupid, stupid, stupid!
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
Not sure. The way dads are portrayed as hopeless and clueless, I guess.
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
I was a high school English teacher. I taught creative writing, general English classes, and helped coach Speech and Debate.
What are you nerdy about?
Grammar.
Favorite music/books/TV/movies:
Hopelessly out of touch with my music. Still listening to the same stuff as in high school!
Books are Alias Grace, Omnivore's Dilemma, Ahab's Wife, To Kill a Mockingbird, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
TV: Bones, Modern Family, Mad Men, Dr. Who, The Office
Movies: Anything indie. Hate action films SO much.
OPTIONAL: Do you have a sex life?
Amazingly, yes.

It's 10am and I'm already thinking about 9pm tonight. That's when the kids will be asleep, my husband will be headed to bed, and I will be alone with the computer. With Dexter, specifically. I'm halfway through the second season of the show on Netflix.

Lately I've noticed myself spending a lot of time thinking about Dexter. While I'm driving to pick up kids from school, while I'm pushing them on the swing, while I make dinner. I look like I'm focused on the task at hand but really I'm… Continue
