hermit crab replied to Zealflyer's discussion 'A reasonable grocery budget'
I rely heavily on kale and cabbage in the winter months. It's so ridiculously cheap and so delicious. Srsly, less than $1/lb. We have kale at least a few times a week, kind of like we used to have string beans a few times a week in my house…

We're right around $600 for three people too. My husband buys deli meat and we eat some fish as a family, but our biggest protein expense is fake meat (stupid expensive delicious Morningstar Farms veggie burgers!) I finally bought some vital…

Wow, this seems brilliant to me. My mother was pretty controlling of what I ate at home and I absolutely developed into a sneak eater. The idea that you teach her to make choices about things she wants, having a conversation about the…

I think this is such a great topic. Growing up, I was both introverted and also believed myself to be very loyal to the friends I did have, so this concept of "defriending" was pretty alien - I believed that I never ended friendships.…

Maybe it would help to show your husband this post? I know you're a writer, so maybe you're expressing yourself more clearly in writing. I can't imagine really understanding that my wife was having a serious, persistent problem and…

Ooh! I signed in to recommend Newegg!  I just bought a desktop computer there for less than $200. Plus $67 for a nice new monitor.  I'm not sure what the benefit of the touchscreen computer would be - seems like it would get smudgy…

Eh, I've seen plenty of outwardly "perfect" families that were seething pots of nasty if you looked up close. The only right way is yours. (Guess which side of the obedience/independent-thinking dichotomy I fall down on?) I think the…

Hi all! I joined OS between three and four years ago. I was home with the bub and working on my dissertation, living in town and enjoying plenty of crafting, therapy and websurfing. These days I'm teaching at a college out in the hinterlands,…

Ooh! I'm part of that audience! I'll check it out. Community is the only show I watched at all (via Hulu, at that) so now that it's not being renewed I officially have no relationship at all with the television. Feeling very 21st…

Our Y has a pretty inexpensive deal for kids' parties, so that's what we went with for the bub's 5th birthday this year. We could basically invite as many people as we wanted and it was wooooonderful not to have to try to figure out…

The power of the venting thread! Brings me back to old-style OS. I find the willingness to vent on these people, who are not living some hideously depraved lifestyle but are just seeking to cover their medical bills, really depressing. If it…

Profile Information

About Me:
still dissertating! But almost done.
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
Mostly everything. Especially when we've all had a good night's sleep.
What's your most recent kid-related public humiliation?
I think he's too young to humiliate. Two-year-old behavior is pretty easy to excuse.
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
If I say the judgment, does that make this a recursive answer?
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
A person without children?
What are you nerdy about?
Life. I'd say life.

moving/middle of the night

We're childfree for the first time in three and a half years since my parents took the bub for the night - we're packing and cleaning the house in preparation for moving in the morning. Several hours of work ahead of us still, but the house is empty and bright.

It's so funny to feel so light and present in this situation - nostalgic, happy to be doing this, for some reason. Maybe it's the novelty. Maybe it's because it's summer and I can drink as many beers as I want while doing this… Continue

I understand - I'm trying to blaze through the final class of my much belated undergrad degree. And then on to my Master's. I figure it won't get any easier and the time will never be "just right."
