If the Byrds Wrote a Kids' Song About Telling Time...

... it'd sound a little bit like this.Making music that's truly for younger kids but has enough musical hooks for the parents is a lot more difficult than countless kids' music press releases make it appear. I've always appreciated Rocknoceros' skills in that regard, and they seem to be negotiating that fine line when it comes to their videos, too. Their latest video from their album Pink!, for "Can You Tell Time" doesn't quite have the scientific…See More

Vote for the Top Kids Music Albums of All Time

I hope to keep the self-promotional stuff to a minimum here, but I think this is pretty cool, and I'd like to get the Offsprung community's input in this, too. On my main site I've started a poll to determine the top kids music albums of all time. There really isn't anything equivalent, and with the resurgence of the genre recently along with some of the…See More

Paleontologists, Electric Cars, and Evolution: Oh My! TMBG's Here Comes Science

Take one geek-friendly band -- They Might Be Giants -- stir in the promotional power of Disney, and just add water. What do you have? A whole bunch of media goodies related to this week's release of their latest CD/DVD set, Here Comes Science. You can read my review of the album and my…See More

Mmmm... Power-pop Meets Cartoons... Drool...

So I kicked off my blog on Offsprung 2.0 with punk music for kids. But I admitted then that my tastes ran more towards quirky They Might Be Giants-style indie-pop. I'll get to TMBG soon enough, but I also have an affinity for a good power-pop tune.I have two words for this, the video for "We R Super Heroes," from Robert Schneider's debut Robbert Bobbert and the…See More

About Me:
I write about all things Barney, Little Einsteins, and Doodlebops. No, wait, that's not me. In Zooglobble I write about the rest of the kids music world -- Dan Zanes, Justin Roberts, Lunch Money, and a whole bunch of other folks.
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
Their smiles, duh.
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
Using kids as your cool badge.
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
Same guy I am now but with less joy, more sleep, and fewer cheap plastic musical instruments.
What are you nerdy about?
Music, duh.
Favorite music/books/TV/movies:
In the non-kids music world: Spoon/John Steinbeck/huh?/Shawshank Redemption

The Ramones Didn't Play Kids Music - Or Did They?

Fill in the blank: Hey! Ho! __________!

I gotta admit that I never really got into the Ramones. I mean, sure, "I Wanna Be Sedated" is a freezer blast of a song (that fill in the blank above is part of the American cultural DNA now), but when I was in high school, I took the geeky route and went for the brainy bands like They Might Be Giants.
