Wow this is a kick ass thread. Kommish, that is such a brilliant and simple suggestion. I'm finding that I'm not a good influence on my kids since my sometimes foods are far to frequent and Loki is a food controller. We are surely messing…

It took me way, way too long to figure out it was Downton Abbey and not Downtown Abbey. I watched it (it is quite good) and thought, my this is rural for an inner city!

I also want to add Downton Abbey to this list.  I've heard some buzz so checked it out on Netflix.  I watched all of season 1 in one weekend.

OMG bap, you were right.  I loved it and it shattered me completely.  I never saw it coming.  Totally blindsided.

SJB, I just read a book called The Book Thief. It's a stand alone young adult novel. Have you read it? You might like it, given the other books you mention.

A quick YA book I just finished, The Giver, was pretty awesome.  It fits into that "classic" category, like The Lottery, or A Separate Peace.  I did really enjoy the Hunger Game & Dragon Tattoo series, but have been steering…

yep, three totally sucks.  It's like every other year sucks, frankly.  Mine are two years apart, but they've managed to keep it so only one is really sucking at a time, thank the gods.

HBD, I love David Mitchell too and in fact Cloud Atlas was one inspiration for my last play. :) I also am perplexed how they're going to make that into a movie. Oh, and World War Z is another good book (pretend ethnography of those involved in…

Anything by David Mitchell, especially intersting because Cloud Atlas is being made into a movie.  I have no idea HOW they're going to do that, given the different narration styles (it's really like reading 9 books by different…

I started reading Sense of an ending by Julian Barnes and so far I'm very interested. We watch Modern Family and The Office on TV, but those aren't new.

I've been spending too much time on BBC police dramas lately - both old (e.g. Touch of Frost) and new (Luther, Whitechapel). I've been reading a bunch of young adult novels recommended by my 14 year old - quite good, easy and quick…

McG - Banagrams is my all time favorite game and I've gotten the family hooked on it too.  Woot! Woot! Bap - um, wow.  Now I'm not sure I want to...but of course, now I am even more curious.  Ugh.

Profile Information

About Me:
Recently jumped into my 40's, forever handcuffed to the corporate world, with a stay-at-home husband, 2 terrific kids, and a variety of foster dogs to keep our permanent dog and cat company.
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
Listening to them laugh and play when they don't know I'm listening.
What's your most recent kid-related public humiliation?
Not too many of those lately - knock wood!
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
Dogma and superiority. Everyone should just do it my way. :)
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
Well rested.
What are you nerdy about?
Don't really have enough spare time to be a true nerd about anything anymore but if I could be one, it would be jazz music, photography, gardening and interior design (I love to create a tranquil space in which to just...be...)
Favorite music/books/TV/movies:
Sopranos, Sex and the City, Scrubs (hey, alliteration!) which are all old I know, but those are the last shows I've been invested in. Movies range from When Harry Met Sally to Fight Club to Lord of the Rings. Books are Harry Potter, Time Travelers Wife, Three Cups of Tea, The Graveyard Book
OPTIONAL: Do you have a sex life?
I can't remember....

Saturday afternoon bitch fest

Posted on April 9, 2011 at 10:59am 5 Comments

Anyone ever read "I, Anonymous" in The Stranger ("Seattle's Only Newspaper")?  Here's mine.  Feel free to add your own....

(PS  Can't bitch about this on FB due to frienship with subjects noted below)

1.  Why, dearest husband, when we have overnight guests arriving in less than 6 hours and the house is a freaking DISASTER of dust, mess, clutter and reno detritus, do you decide that NOW is when the light switch in the basement needs to be painted because "it's…

Wow, that was weird

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 6:02am 5 Comments

I have trouble with insomnia so my doc gave me a scrip for generic ambien/lunesta/equivalent. It works great and generally leaves me with no "hangover" the next day. However, I have been using it more and more frequently and now it's generally every night. It's not a physical dependence, but I think more of a psychological one. I've been thinking I should really wean myself.

Well, last night, I came home after traveling all week. I was exhausted, but still took my pill.…

Rating pain

Posted on April 13, 2010 at 2:00pm 7 Comments

As The Oracle mentioned in a recent post, medical professionals will often ask you to rate your pain on a scale of 1 to 10, one being no pain and ten being pure agony. I find this helpful because pain is very subjective - there's no way to measure it in absolute terms, so a 4 for you may be a 7 for me. But still, it's my 7 and I want some relief.

When my daughter was in the worst of her medical crisis two years ago, she would frequently give a 9 or a 10 and it would break…

Surgery update

Posted on April 3, 2010 at 6:37am 12 Comments

I've been kind of MIA lately, but thought I would post a quick update. I developed a massive wound infection from my incision and was readmitted to the hospital for a week. They reopened the wound completely (in the ER with only lidocaine and dilaudid for pain, which trust me was not enough) to let it drain and left it open for about 3 days. Loki said it was roughly 8-9 inches long and about 4-5 inches deep. He said he could have put his hand into it. The doc said he could actually see my… Continue

Post op musings, in no particular order

Posted on March 16, 2010 at 7:02am 6 Comments

* I wanted to be one of those people that other people could later say about "Even with all she went through, she never complained!". Yeah. Not so much. I've worked really, really hard on staying positive, but I'm a week out, still can't take a full breath without gasping in pain much less move around easily or do pretty much anything for… Continue
