Fun with genetics

Well, it's official, GirlWho has Ehlers-Danlos. Yup. Having her diagnosed as a child should hopefully prevent her from being in the position I'm in, and it seems that she's not quite as hypermobile as I am, which is a good thing. She will get modifications for PE under a 504 plan. I'm not sure how that will work yet.

I'm glad we followed our gut instincts and kept her out of gymnastics and soccer - she's supposed to stay out of contact sports and she's to avoid bearing her…

My mother, the jailbird.

Posted on July 18, 2010 at 3:24pm 9 Comments

Sweet mother of God. My mother has been hauled off to jail. Turns out she spent the night there a few weeks ago, too. It seems this latest trip is because she blew off a court date for the previous stay. No one is going to bail her out. She's burned those bridges. My youngest brother was her last cash cow, and she was draining his checking account without his permission, and overdrawing it. He is leaving, hopefully for good, to stay with his dad's family out of state. I have a policy to never,… Continue

Tornado Alley

Posted on May 3, 2010 at 9:36am 6 Comments

It always feels strange to not be home, in Oklahoma, on two days of the year. The first is April 19. The second, and the one on which the strange feeling is the most compelling, is May 3. Maybe because it's more private, more of a local thing.

May 3, 1999 is the date of the F5 tornado that leveled several communities, killed 49 people, and changed the way tornadoes are classified and measured. Actually, there were 140 some-odd separate tornadoes that day, but it's the big…

I may be nomadic . . .

Posted on April 22, 2010 at 9:00am 7 Comments

. . because I'm itching to move again. I like it here, but damn it's expensive. I can't see trying to buy a house here. DaddyWho made the final cut for a job in Minnesota and also in Miami, where I really don't want to live. But he's also on the short list for a job in San Antonio. I've lived there twice, and bitched the whole time. I used to have to drive DW to his appointments and surgeries there. I was heavily pregnant there, in late summer. Not great memories. But I'm strangely excited…

Frickin' Facebook

Posted on January 7, 2010 at 8:30am 24 Comments

I just found my mortal enemy on FB. He is a friend of a friend of mine - no surprise, we had a number of small seminar classes together in college. He's a fan of Sarah Palin. He's one of those homeschool kids that give perfectly wonderful homeschooled kids and their families a bad name. His mother objected to my being in one of our honors courses, because I was older, married, and possibly a corrupting influence as we were talking about some risque subjects - secular art. Did I mention that… Continue

Right on - we need a motto or marching cadence or something. Working to the end by yourself off campus is a lonely sport!

Si! It is I! Sorry to be mysterious - I'm in bizarro-push-to-finish world here and I needed a less chatty persona. Come the filing of my dissertation in December (fingers crossed) I'll reinvent myself as Lady Talkstomuch or some such thing...

I totally oversimplified your "gender roles" comment when replying to it....please don't hold it against me.

Also, will you put your red lentils recipe on the Recipe page? I never actually made it, but I do have some red lentils...

The picture is Shadow the Wonder Cat who can't stay out of trouble. It's actually from last summer when he got into a fight and ended up with stitches in his behind. I thought that was the worst he could do but right now he's got stiches in the same place and an icky drainage tube in. He doesn't run away fast enough.
Pets are awesome, eh?

Yeah, I figured: what the heck! I never could keep track of everyone's "real name" on Facebook.

Nice to see you, too!

It's just that the liberal privilege here has been like a gigantic neon sign.  And it kind of pissed me off, frankly. We were the same people, who over a year ago, were talking about health care being a human right. If we lived in a…

They're not better than you. But what you had to do doesn't make you better than them. That's the point here. Losing your insurance when pregnant is a big crisis.

When you deftly dodged the questions about the nature of your surgery, I figured it was something like this. So glad you got good news!
