Profile Information

About Me:
I am a cranky, liberal, Italian-American, Episcopalian, Bronx-born, Jersey-bred 40-year-old part-time working mother/part-time SAHM currently buckling under the demands — and the joys! Don’t forget the joys! — of two colorful young sons; a husband who steadfastly refuses to be George Clooney; two cats (one old, one stupid); and a craptacular, 100-year-old house.
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
They love each other a lot, they still like to kiss and snuggle with me, they love to read/be read to, other kids seem to really like them, and it has been ages since either of them has held up a 7-11.
What's your most recent kid-related public humiliation?
At a baptism at our church recently, which was held — as baptisms customarily are — during our regular Sunday service, our atheist 5-year-old demanded to know, "Why am I here? Who is this kid?"
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
People who treat parenting as if it is a project or experiment, rather than a relationship, and an entirely unique one at that.
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
I was someone who cooked a lot more, traveled a lot farther, smoked, cared way too much about work, and didn't necessarily worry so much about the state of the world.
What are you nerdy about?
I am a complete Anglophile. I am fairly certain, in fact, that I actually am British, all evidence to the contrary. I am a British person who just happened to be born in the Bronx to Italian-American parents. (Maybe like a crazy right-winger, I'll demand to see my own birth certificate.) Everything British is fabulous, especially the TV. That said, I am also nerdy about following rules (with the exception of the rules of the road); straightening up before bed; politics; history documentaries and, sigh, historical reenactment performances (Colonial Williamsburg, the Lost Colony of Roanoke, Hancock Shaker Village, the Ben Franklin impersonator who bops around Independence Hall, all that stuff); and grammar.
Favorite music/books/TV/movies:
Music: punk, pop/punk, some country, 80s New Wave, 80s/90s college rock

Books: British mysteries, all other mysteries, Jane Austen, William Faulkner, historical non-fiction, historical fiction, and the three Franken-novels I have in various sad stages of development

TV: Oh, good Lord, this is a long list. Anything on BBC America and HGTV, plus "Intervention," "Lost," "The Office," and "30 Rock." "Mad Men," which is the best thing I've ever seen, I think. Premium cable stuff like "The Sopranos" and "Deadwood" (back in the day), "The Tudors," "Dexter," "Secret Diary of a Call Girl," and "Party Down." Also, about a million canceled-too-soon shows over the past decade, especially "Freaks and Geeks," "Aliens in America," "Andy Richter Controls the Universe," and "Swingtown."

Movies: Jaws, Trading Places, The Godfather I and II, Mystic Pizza, Goodfellas, and every single period piece and costume drama ever made, especially if a British cast is involved.
OPTIONAL: Do you have a sex life?
I do. But don't tell my husband.

Oldest Living Bridesmaid Tells All

Posted on September 24, 2010 at 7:30pm 8 Comments

My first post in many months is dedicated to my new brother-in-law Dennis, who I love.

Much of my 2010 has been consumed with the wedding of the century, that of my sister, Princess Di (a/k/a "Miss Monopoly") and brother-in-law Dennis (a/k/a "Dennis"), which finally took place on July 31, same day as Chelsea's. (If…

Killer Be Killed

Posted on May 14, 2010 at 4:36pm 11 Comments

The past several months have not been kind to various non-humans who reside(d) in the Haus. I will eventually discuss some of our feline tragedies, but our first tale of woe concerns Killer, the hermit crab Crazy Gabi gave The Heir for Christmas.

Longtime Offsprungers might remember Crazy Gabi, my parents' next door neighbor who gave us rabies in the summer of 2006. A brief overview for those of you who don't recall this particular highlight of my parenting adventure: Since my parents,… Continue

Bingo Is Not, Apparently, My Name-O

Posted on April 25, 2010 at 9:00am 5 Comments

Those of you who know me, either on Offsprung or in the alt-verse (where Jack has a son and Ben is a high school history teacher), know that I intend to live to be 120 years old. I plan to emulate my hero, Jeanne Calment, formerly of France, currently of heaven, who died at age 122. I don't feel the need to share the longest-lived crown with Ms. Calment, being that she's my hero and all, and so am content to fall a couple of years short. In all honesty, though, if I make it to 121, I… Continue

Pandolfo Roy Obnoxious Holiday Update, V. 2009

Posted on December 22, 2009 at 6:34am 7 Comments

Hi Offsprungers: I've missed you. Suffice it to say that I've taken on too much, and the start of the school year till now has left me with little time to ponder, reflect, observe, analyze, or appreciate, and without doing those things, I don't have all that much to say. And you know how it goes: the longer you stay away from something, the harder it is to dive in again. But NotClooney feels very strongly that my writing, provided I keep sharpening my skills, is much more conducive to his… Continue

Aren't They Not Supposed to Wreck Your Car till They're Teenagers?

Posted on October 11, 2009 at 6:04am 7 Comments

Despite having grown up Monopoly – that is, despite being the spawn of big spenders Mr. Monopoly and Mr. Mr. Monopoly – I am not known for my own profligate ways. Quite the opposite, in fact; I'm kind of a cheap bastard (or "basterd," as the kool kidz spell it), at least as far as things are concerned. Don't get me wrong, I do spend money, but my rule seems to be that if something lasts longer than two weeks, I don't want it. So essentially, my mad cash, such as it is, is burned on… Continue
