About Me:
Just your average pop culture junkie who loves movies, TV and music. Somehow managed to become the father of two. Relentlessly but lovingly called a geek by his wife. But he's okay with that.

I am the writer of the Offsprung blog Reeling.

I also write a pop culture and parenting blog, which you can find by clicking here.
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
I could listen to the sound of them laughing forever.
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
There's hardly a toy out there that doesn't light up or make sounds.
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
Younger. Just as nerdy.
What are you nerdy about?
Seriously?
Favorite music/books/TV/movies:
It's hard to limit it to just a few...

Phish, Ben Folds, Beastie Boys...
The Sure Thing, Empire Strikes Back, Back to the Future...
Simpsons, Food Network, BSG, How I Met Your Mother...
OPTIONAL: Do you have a sex life?
Seriously?

Background: No babies of my own (yet!), in the working-toward-it-but-not-preggers-yet stage, so I only have my own experience to add. I was raised in a house with myself and a younger sister. I was, long story short, raised to believe that emotions…

I'm coming to this discussion very late. It's very interesting to me. While I only have one child right now, I can tell you that his personality shows both masculine and feminine parts (as defined by our society). He's active and…

Ah, I see what you mean. Well, she is her own little person, so it's entirely possible for that to be the case.

Heh, I was running out the door so I probably wasn't clear. I mean, maybe you've assumed she likes that stuff because her big brother does, when really she just likes it. :)

mmm, how so? I'm not sure what you mean, and I'm hungry so my brain is on hiatus for the moment! :D

I wonder if that's misattribution, MNM? After all, my sisters thought I was very cool when they were younger (oh how wrong they were!) but we were obviously interested in very different things.

Huh. Interesting. I tend to think my kids are pretty gender normative. Although, the Little Miss has never been interested in 'girl' toys, but I always attributed this to her worship of her brother, rather than personal preference. She…

This sounds more like a personality thing than a gender difference to me. My daughter is only 16 months, but so far she plays in pretty much he same way my son did. Neither of them have been too into toys - mostly they just want to throw Cds and…

Big O and Ebay are night and day with behavior. O rarely ran me ragged, she's more mind-oriented. Ebay is a freakin' energy machine. Her behavior would fall into what many would consider " boyish". She climbs over everything,…

Or do girls with these disorders simply present differently? Personally, my bias is towards this one.  I think the correlation between genders and specific learning disabilities, neurological differences, etc are overestimated, because I think…

Interesting thread.   Another thing to consider - kids are pattern recognizing machines and over-apply rules when they think they have figured them out. For those of you who have made it to the language explostion stage of toddlerhood, consider…

I just got back from the sweetest production on "Talking with students about sexual orientation and gender identity" presented by a range of students from 6th-11th grades. Can I just say that I am so hopeful that all of the coercive…

I just picked up an interesting book on the topic: Pink Brain, Blue Brain: How Small Differences Grow into Troublesome Gaps--and What We Can Do About it.  Unfortunately, I haven't even cracked the cover yet.  But, I think…

Why prove that boys and girls are wired differently? To what end?   In part, I think it has to do with our generation’s constant need to reassure ourselves that we’re not “bad” parents. A lot of us came to parenting…

McGlory...From your comment I realize that my phrase "boys and girls are wired differently" is a bit misleading towards my actual meaning.  I'm not a scientist so I haven't studied the actual wiring of boys and girls. …
