DLBK replied to SweetJudyB's discussion 'Picking a Kindergarten'
"My oldest will be going to kindergarden, too! We don't have a choice unless we want to pay for private school (we don't), but some of the schools your kids will be going to sound great. I didn't know you could test the IQ of a 5 year…"

"Many hugs from here, too. I am lucky that I finished my PhD before I had kids. I just can't imagine being in graduate school and having to parent! "

DLBK replied to rommie's discussion 'Pre-labor question'
"Both times I knew immediately when I was in labor. With my first I had been having BH, but the first mildly painful contraction felt very different. That labor was 19 hrs long which included 3 hrs of pushing. My OB was giving directions to prepare…"

DLBK replied to rommie's discussion 'Managing expectations'
"The idea of a birth necklace is lovely, but I don't see that happening without it going along with a shower. Like others have said, people are flaky and forget such small requests. I'm sorry so many people are letting you down. I can get…"

DLBK replied to wookie's discussion 'Looking past the sarcasam'
"You shouldn't change. He's not your forth child. If your spouse wants more involvement in family work/time, he should make sure he's available and willing to spend the time and energy."

DLBK replied to rommie's discussion 'How to say no'
"I'm coming late to this discussion, but I agree with what others have said. Giving birth is about you and the baby you're about to have and the rest of the immediate family. Your mother's feelings aren't important here; it's…"

DLBK replied to GreenLantern's discussion 'Wow. No talk about any of the debates?'
"I didn't watch, since I also know who I'm voting for. I didn't want to get annoyed for no reason."

DLBK replied to StitchyWench's discussion 'The way she dresses'
"I can't believe that in this day and age a girl is being blamed for distracting boys. Really?! So it's not the boys' fault if they get distracted, right?! That makes me very angry!"

DLBK replied to ruth's discussion 'Weirdest fear'

DLBK replied to Kat's discussion 'Single Parenting -- It's Not Temporary'
"Having a spouse who travels isn't single parenthood, indeed. My husband traveled a lot late last year and for the first half of this year, and it was terrible on me and the kids. However, we still got to talk to him on the phone almost daily,…"

DLBK replied to bethany's discussion 'When you don't agree about discipline.'
"While we're not against corporal punishment, I find it very hard to be calm about spanking--harder than being calm about a time out of loss of privileges. This very detail makes me really hold back corporal punishment most of the time--what if…"

"My 4-year old's newest insult: "I don't like you! I don't need a mommy! I want to put you in the trash!" This is usually followed by insane crying as I'm walking away from him--I will not stand there and be insulted.…"

Profile Information

About Me:
I have a son born in March 2008. I've been married for almost 7 years to a great guy. We never knew that parenthood would be so great and yet so much work.
I work part time as a postdoctoral fellow doing research in biomedical science.
What's something about your kid(s) that makes you happy?
I love his smiles and laughs and at his age all the new stuff he's always learning.
What's your most recent kid-related public humiliation?
He's pretty young, so I don't know that I've had a lot of humiliation.
What about contemporary parenting culture pisses you off the most?
Sexism. I hate how boys are encouraged to play with trucks while girls are given dolls. My son has both.
I also despise how girls are always encouraged to wear pink and play with pink building blocks, pink stuffed animals, pink everything.
I have nothing against the color pink, but it's very boring after a while. A lot of boy stuff is blue, but it's not nearly as bad.
Who were you BEFORE you became a parent?
I was a wife, friend, and full time scientist. Not that different from now.
What are you nerdy about?
Reading and sleeping (what parent doesn't want more sleep?!).
Favorite music/books/TV/movies:
Music--Pink Floyd.
Books--a lot of non-fiction lately.

I dislike movies because I have no understanding of them and haven't watched much TV at all since my son was born last year.
OPTIONAL: Do you have a sex life?
Yes.
