Recommended: Parenting From the Inside Out by Daniel Siegel and Mary Hartzell. A fascinating look for lay people at how early parenting shapes children's brain structure and lifelong patterns of relating.

Recommended: Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka. A really useful, highly readable outline of inherent temperament traits that can help parents better understand all children (not just their spirited ones), themselves and their spouses/partners.

Recommended: The Ethics of What We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter by Peter Singer. Well-researched, well-documented, seemingly unbiased examination of the U.S. food industry and how the choices we make as a country collectively impact health, equity, environment and more.

Recommended by Give William a Damn Doll! in its inaugural post:

1) Real Boys by William Pollack. A general audience book that covers studies done on talking to boys about emotions.

2) Why Gender Matters by Leonard Sax. His title is misleading, because it's actually a general audience book about biological sex differences and how they might affect childhood development. However, Sax's approach is to offer specific exercises for each sex that might address their differences in raising a whole child, rather than to suggest any thing is "fixed" by sex. He also dismantles the bad and discriminatory arguments based upon science (like the small brains thing).
