So, I'm mourning the passing of MCA tonight, and reminiscing about my all time favorite concerts.  Here are mine, what are yours?

In no particular order....

1.  Gogol Bordello - The Roxie, Atlanta, 2009

2. Elvis Costello - The Fillmore, San Francisco, 1995

3.  Beastie Boys - The Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, 1999

4.  David Bowie - The Warfield, San Francisco, 1997

5.  George Clinton - BB Kings, New York, 2012

1. 1st ever Coachella show - Tool, RATM & Beck, Morrisy & Chemical Bros.

2. Depeche Mode 1987 Black Celebration Tour

3. The Cure - CalExpo in Sacramento, 1992

4. Jane Addiction New Years show, 199-something?

5. Sugar - some little hole in the wall place

I'm not even going to pretend that I'm cool. I listen to some *shitty* music according to most people. The "good" concerts for me was more about who was there with me or things happening at the time.

5. Any TMBG concert. They were all good. They all involved driving to college campuses that seemed to have WAY more of a student life than my engineering school:).

4. REM --1999? 2000? Consummate professionals, really got my money's worth.

3. My first concert was NKOTB around 1988ish, har har, but my first concert without adults was Bryan Adams in 1993. Hell yes.

2. BNL always put on great shows, each one was supremely entertaining. Too bad their lead singer is kind of a dick now. I always expected better from them, being Canadians (kidding!)

1. Green Day --September 1994. Second concert alone. We were originally going to see them in Cleveland, but there was a riot and we thought better of it. So we went to see them at Blossom near my house. Then this happened: "A mob of fans wishing to enter the venue was turned away, which incited a rock-and-bottle-throwing melee. Frustrated fans began pouring into the venue over the walls. Police entered Nautica in riot gear and pulled the plug just as Green Day took the stage. Two months later, the band made good at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls-for a scant $5 admission-and fans carried on their insurrection by destroying the venue's lawn. This time, however, the show carried on." It. was. amazing. I felt so punk. Then I came home and did my algebra homework and studied for Science Olympiad.

I am also Not Cool. I don't like concerts at all.  I'd much, much rather just stay home and listen to whatever music it is in the comfort of my own living room/kitchen/wherever.

My first concert was after I got married.  Mr. S, who is into all things electronica, took me (he wanted to go and so I went with, is how that should be translated) to Chicago to see Moby on the Play tour.  I like the music just fine, but I did not enjoy the concert.  There were just too many people and it was so loud and just not fun.  Last one wasn't even really a concert, but it was also in service of Mr. S's love of techno/dance music.  There was some kind of DJ festival/something-or-other in Toronto at Kool Haus that he wanted to go to, so we went (on my birthday, I might add).  It was awful.  The music was horrible and there were so god damn many people.  I am mildly claustrophobic and I don't do well in crowds at all, so when we got stuck in a stairwell with about 500 other people (seriously, there was NO personal space at all) for about half an hour and then the lights went out for a few minutes, I had a bit of a panic attack and as soon as we got out of that, I made him leave.  That was 6 years ago and nobody has suggested that I try to go to another.  Probably a good thing.

Oh yay! I thought I was the only person in the world who didn't especially like concerts. My favorite ones have actually been outdoors -- Indigo Girls on the Seattle waterfront, Ani DiFranco on some open field in Olympia (btw *swoon* Ani DiFranco puts on a fantastic show. I've seen her several times, once in a really small venue in Seattle.) -- and the tail end of a Grateful Dead show in Eugene a few months before Jerry died. Tail end because we were on the damn freeway stuck in concert traffic for about eight hours that should have been four. So disappointing.

I also REALLY dug seeing the Violent Femmes. Who just fucking rocked. Again, outside. And Flogging Molly with the Street Dogs opening, though it was inside and I was kind of squished against a railing. Still, that show kind of blew me away. Except for the little woman next to me who insisted on shouting all the lyrics at the top of her lungs. I still hate her.

My first concert (and my first contact high) was Men at Work in 1983. Jesus, I'm old.

I too, do not enjoy concerts because of my aversion to crowds. However, Lollapalooza '92 rocked my ass off. I crowd surfed, I got on stage twice! Once during the Pearl Jam set and once during Red Hot Chili Peppers. I also took a combat boot to the face and learned that mosh pits full of pubescent boys and man-boys are no joke for a girl who is 5'1 and 98 lbs. I kept getting shoved into the same biker dude - we both laughed about it and finally I said, "We've got to quit meeting like this!" Then I found some huge guy to pick me up and toss me out of the pit.

Oracle, it is possible I was at that same Ani DiFranco show! I've seen her twice, once at a theater in Eugene, and once in outdoors in Washington. I think I like her better live. She does indeed put on a good show, and Maceo Parker, her opener was amazing as well.

In no particular order, Violent Femmes at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, Ani Di Franco pretty much anywhere, Ozomatli at the Santa Cruz Civic Center and some random place in Saint Louis, Pink Martini with the San Francisco Symphony, and Tori Amos a few months ago with a string quartet in Seattle.  There were lots and lots and lots of other good ones, but those are the best I can remember right now.

Oh, I totally agree.  My *best* concerts always included who I was with, the overall mood, the venue etc.  So, I would have to add seeing 16 Horsepower at Johnny Foley's in SF on February 1st, 2001 (I remember because it was 3 days before Raidne arrived) as another best.

I don't really like concerts either. I liked them when I was a teenager though. Now it's too expensive, too much standing, too loud, etc. etc. you young whippersnappers get off my yard!

That said:

1. My Dad and I drove to Cincinnati to see Billy Joel

2. My best friends and I drove to another city to see R.E.M. where I ran into and flirted with the boy who turned out to be my high school love.

3. My best friends and I somehow got fifth row seats to Tori Amos.

4. Lilith Festival (the first year, when it was all singer-songwriters)

5. My spouse (when he was just my boyfriend ) bought REM tickets but demonstrated geographical confusion by getting them for a city 6 hours away when I had to be at work the next morning at 8 AM. During the encore of "It's The End of the World" it started sprinkling and everybody in the grassy area was dancing in the rain. Then we drove all night, got stuck in construction, I was so tired I was crying, and then I worked an 8 hour shift (because I was 19).

OMG Keep this. Show your children one day. For reals. That is the best list ever.

And apparently you win all the cool points.

Buddy Guy @ Folk Fest in Winnepeg under the Northern Lights.  first time I saw both! Also Ani DiFranco was there.
