I get what you all are saying, and I see it for our generation. But I don't quite buy it WRT kids today. They've seen way cooler special effects on, I don't know, PBS. Pretty much every action/adventure flick is a retelling of the Hero's Journey. Lots of movies have toys associated with them. Most five-year-olds I know today couldn't care less about the father/son relationship thing, the musical score, the enduring sound bites...
The only thing I can see is that, yep, even I think light sabers are pretty cool. Maybe it is the parent thing, like DGB said. At five, the Dragon still thinks we're cool, so if Alan says Star Wars is cool, then obviously it must be so.

Anyway, what ks said WRT Star Trek, particularly The Next Generation.
And Oracle, I think the fact that kids today can get into it speaks to what the fans on here are saying.... it's so not about the special effects, and so much more about the classic story, son/father stuff, good/evil stuff, and just relatable, likeable characters involved in an epic storyline.

I also agree with Annaevilred and Ruth. Star Wars is just awesome (but not anything that came after Return of the Jedi, and that one is the least good of the original 3) and I developed my first crush on Han Solo. Because, Han Solo is just super cool and also awesome.
However, I do have to disagree with wookie a bit about Star Trek--I love that almost as much as Star Wars. For completely different reasons that I'm equally unable to articulate other than it's also just fucking awesome. I don't think they need to be put in competition with each other, because they tell completely different stories.
