Offsprung

An irreverent, inclusive, alternative parenting community

I don't even remember where I read about the site. It was 4 houses and two states ago, I remember that!

Mamawho, it was 4 houses ago for me as well, but only one state. Well, five if you count the current house. Why have I moved so much?

I'm grateful for this site as well. Apparently, it's possible to be funny without being mean and nice without being cloying--something I wish the rest of the parenting communities (and the world in general) would realize. I found OS soon after we started trying to get pregnant via Terrible Mother. You've stuck by me through my freak outs, miscarriages, pregnancies, and now Moose's life. You're good people, even if that wasn't part of Neal's original plan and even if at least half of you are certifiably crazy.  Some more than others.  Sometimes, I think we attract Teh Craaaazy.

Also, you can all more or less spell, punctuate, and refrain from referring to every bloody person in your life as “dear,” which means I love you all with the fury of a thousand suns.

I wandered over here after hearing Alternadad on a (sadly now defunct) podcast called Jumping Monkeys. I just liked that people were "real" and not evil to each other. I remember being SO nervous the first time I hit "add reply!" Sure, there were *ahem* heated debates but not flame wars where PEOPLE TYPED IN CAPITALS ALL THE TIME... And I liked that if people had problems, others gave their honest opinion. Even if it was spectrums away from the crowd. I learned a lot and it made me see other perspectives to consider.

I love you guys! :)

Wow, I didn't know you could get pregnant that way!

I came here through Flea, one of the guest authors?  I miss her but haven't seen boo of her writing in well over 2 years iirc.

Crap, it's been a long time!

I believe my first actual post on the old OS was about the Little Miss's sleeping issues. Pretty much every reply told me to message Oracle. heh. Although that led to a long and interesting email exchange, and I'm happy to call Oracle a friend.

It's actually been fun meeting so many members over the last five years. Madame Ellie has become my BFF - I just wish she hadn't left Texas. : (

I like that, even though a lot of us are FB friends (though at least one of you I still don't know your actual name!) and we talk about everything there, this site remains our clubhouse. We can come here and vent in anonymity and still have the same support. That little [OS] tag is like the "friends needed batsignal"

HBD, I love that too.  And there are still a couple of people on FB that I know are from here, but I don't know who goes with which screen name for them.

I came over at the beginning for the blogs and stayed for the community.  Pandagon and Feministe are two of my regular reads and Amanda and Lauren were writing the political blog here, so I popped over to see what it was like.  I'm really glad I did.

But of course. It's all the rage in Europe.

(I think this fetus has eaten my brain. Zombie baby!)

I am so, so, so immensely grateful for this place.  I love FB, but there are a lot of bigger issues/questions that I would never feel comfortable posting there.  Here I can just let it all out and no one thinks I'm crazy.  Or at least not any crazier than they are.

My brother introduced me to this place because he followed Don't Forget to Flush (with whom I'm now friends with on FB).  He didn't even have kids then, so he read the blogs, but never got on the parenting pages.  He's expecting his second in the next 2 weeks, and he still doesn't come here on the discussion pages.  That's OK by me!

I miss the bloggers but some of them I do get the keep up with on FB.  And it does feel more like a clubhouse here.  You all are closer to me in many ways than anyone IRL.  Sometimes I feel sad about that, but usually I'm just glad I found you all.

I love you man!  I mean...I REALLY love you!

(group hug and beer spilling will now commence)

I heard an interview on NPR with Neal when Alternadad came out and I bought it, read it, and laughed a lot.  I found OS by perusing through his website shortly after reading the memoir.  I was newly pregnant with Baby Grey and had recently moved to Maryland from Virginia.  You guys have been awesome, through the laughs and the fist-shaking.  I'm FB friends with many of you, though I lose sight of who is who, but that's okay.  I've met several of you in real life, too.

Thanks, Alan and Oracle, for keeping the site going.  Mwah!

*Had to delete original and repost for privacy, although I suppose Neal's article outed them.  Sorry!
