Offsprung

An irreverent, inclusive, alternative parenting community

To combat the 30+ spammers who registered today and tried to post we have temporarily changed the member joining function. For the time being all new members will have to be approved by the admins. Hopefully we can go back to normal in a day or two.

I guess we are popular?

Rash of Spammers = cool band name.
I think it's a good plan! And a good band name.
I'd go to that show.
Definitely a good band name. I've been wondering what's up with all the spam... I guess being popular isn't as cool as it always looked?
I used to like Rash of Spammers, but they sold out.
You know, the spammers found the site we run too. I was shocked because it's a health issue site for a very rare disorder, so it's not like a lot of people stumble on us. They have to be looking. But find us they did. And managed to find a way to post photos in our chat room. Porn photos. I can't imagine the shock of some anxious parent scared about their kid's serious health problem looking for support and information and finding an EXTREME CLOSE UP of someone's snatch. (rude word, I know, but they make me mad).

Once they found us, they never went away. That was probably 8-9 months ago and we still have to approve all member applications. We get probably 20-30 a day. It sucks.
If any are interested here is what Ning (Offsprung.com's host) will be doing about spam profiles next week and the comments about it. I have already blocked 9 spam profile attempts today and let in one legit member.
They do require it, so I'm not sure what it will all entail. New members people have to use CAPTCHA to make comments or start topics if they have not been verified? But don't you have to be verified to join? I'm going to test the system next week and see what is what.

Is the CAPTCHA a box with twisty-looking characters you have to enter? I wondered from time to time why they didn't require people to do that at least to register an account.
Hi fugitive247,

The way we’ve set this up, the only members who will see this are members that have joined your Ning Network, haven’t verified their email address, haven’t clicked on an email notification, and haven’t been approved on your Ning Network (if you have moderation on).

Essentially, your most active, trustworthy members won’t see the CAPTCHA. Hope that helps clarify!

Hi Madam President,

That’s right – if you moderate your members, they won’t see the CAPTCHA.

Thanks!
Laura

I saw the above in the comments on the Ning post you linked to. Does that answer your questions a bit, Alan?

It does somewhat, but as I understood how Ning worked, you were not supposed to be able to access the any Ning network until you verified your email address and did all that. Guess I'll try and register and see.

And now people can join with out approval by management, the rash seems to have cleared up.
