Oracle: you want to blame capitalism. :) Of course, some of the precursors, like the feudal system, wouldn't exactly be fun to live under either, though you'd have more people around to help.

I am sorry you're experiencing so much pain. I can imagine that would make doing anything almost impossible.
Agreed. Pain levels that are torture are not good. The day recently that my neck "popped", I was thrilled that kid was at a friend's house.

As for nuclear families and such, I've also been contemplating it a lot recently. The institutions that we are part of want a lot out of us. Yet, we [us specifically] are being asked to do it without family nearby to help and without institutions (say, work) giving back or being committed to us like they have in the past. So, our family and "institutions" have become a strange network of friends pieced together. And, it's working ok, but without the tax-break or without recognition of "volunteering." That sounds whiny and don't want tax breaks or gold stars, but I might appreciate it if "society" appreciated the work and value of friends more.
