Katy Perry vs. Sesame Street?

Here's the story, if you didn't hear:

Katy Perry made this video with Elmo for Sesame Street...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHROHJlU_Ng

It was posted on You Tube and a day later, after complaints, Sesame Street took it down and won't air it.  Parents were complaining that Katy's outfit was too revealing and that it was inappropriate.

I think it's a pretty big over-reaction by potentially a few parents.  What do you think?

I thought the same thing. My kids don't even watch sesame street anymore. Half of it is "elmo's world" which they find annoying. Maybe I'm becoming an old fuddy duddy, but I don't see the value in something like this Katy Perry thing. I don't find it offensive, or the outfit that out of line, but it's the quality of the content that I call into question.

No problem with the dress. Problem with Sesame Street having Katy Perry on. Seriously. This is the show that used to have guests like Itzhak Perlman who taught important lessons. Now it's mass produced commercial crap like Katy Perry teaching nothing at all. It's all entertainment/motion/noise, etc. Sign of the times. (Also, this jibes with the whole Neil Postman theory that kids are being turned into consumers at a much younger age today than they were decades ago. It's not about education so much as it's about initiation into a world where price tags are hanging on everything and marketing reigns.) Tickle me, Elmo. Just don't challenge me.
Her outfit reminds me of a figure skating costume...

I did get a little squicked by the thought that she sounded like she was singing to a lover and this is supposed to be a kid show then realized that a young kid isn't going to understand the hot and cold thing, maybe that's more about the relationship and you know, little kids DO that to each other all the time! One minute you're friends, the next you aren't thing that happens in preschool.

I think if Sesame Street had an issue they could have stopped filming and asked for a costume change, I can see where some really conservative parents would be offended and where parents of kids who copy everything wouldn't want their kids to watch it. Sesame Street has always been about trying to get the parents to watch with the kids and this is obviously getting people to talk about it and think about what their kids are watching on tv. Even when I was a kid I remember characters on the screen telling viewers to go ask their parent or whoever was home with them a question. So if that was what they were trying to do, mission accomplished.

For the record, I can't stand that woman but I don't think they should have cut the scene. It isn't racy in my view, if you really think about it when you're watching and the audience they target.
Maybe this is too obvious for this group, but what really irks me is how LITTLE people seem to give a shit about violence in kids' movies but go ape shit when everyone's not wearing turtle necks.
Yep. Falls into the same category of "why is it okay for my kid's sweatshirt to be covered in skulls but my sweatshirt with a Betty Page-y looking lady in a martini glass feels inappropriate for the playground?" To be fair, she's not wearing a shirt, but it's not, like, a huge picture.

Aaaand now I feel icky trying to explain it. Maybe it's not actually appropriate. Hi! *waves* I have bad boundaries!
