My almost 8 month old has started crawling like a pro! She loves it and trucks around on her own for a good portion of each day.

It's super cute, but unfortunately the result has been very red knees. At night she looks like she's kneeled in red paint, and they are warm to the touch. Lately they are even still red the next morning.

I'm not sure why, but this didn't happen with my first daughter, so not sure what to do. Right now she's in pants, but we live in Phoenix, so it will be warm enough for shorts within the next couple of weeks, so I can only imagine it's only going to get worse.

Has anyone else experienced this? Will her knees just sort of toughen up in time? Do the baby knee pads work, and if so is there a certain brand that you particularly liked?

On a somewhat related note, I was also just told that kneecaps in babies and toddlers are actually sort of soft cartilage. Apparently it doesn't turn into hard bone until after a couple of years. I have two kids, but somehow never realized that.

That much redness and inflammation I would wonder if there is a contact allergy going on. But maybe it is just a question of "toughening up". I've never heard of baby knee pads though :-)

If it doesn't start reducing in a couple of weeks I'd worry more. Wish I could help more... all of my kids just scooted on their butts.
wookie makes a good point about allergies. If she's doing a lot of crawling on carpeting, you may want to shampoo them or steam clean them. I never bothered with knee pads...neither of my kiddos crawled long enough for me to think about doing that.
