I forgot how politically diverse some of my facebook friends are, and I have been wanting to comment on the comments without getting into it with anyone.

So here is some of what I woke up to -

Okay, if Obama is speaking about how great our country (still) is with all of the freedoms (which is why so many come here, then why are he and the demacratic powers that be working so hard to destroy it all. Nice speech......

Patrick Watching state of the union address. Never seen anyone more pained in clapping than John Boehner.
Michelle  Watching the State of the Union. We dvr'd it. So far, I am unimpressed.

I agree that it sounded inspired, but little was actually SAID.  I look forward to hearing details of his upcoming planned programs before thinking strongly one way or the other.  I do think the night as a whole was a strong showing of support for each other, even if they go right back to fighting with each other.

And I thought it hilarious to focus on McCain while Obama talked about letting the kids of immigrants be.  Ooh, that face!

And Michelle Bachman's rebuttal?  Duh, camera's this way!

I didn't get to watch it, but here's the reactions that were on my facebook:

Bob

1.  Watching the State of the Union. Why is the president Orange??? His face does not match his hands.

2.  Tolly-ban? This guy is such a hard on

3.  Anything about bringing American jobs back to America for American citizens you fucking tangerine colored douchebag?

Bob (a different Bob, it must be something about the name)

1.  The state of the YYAAAAAAWWWWN union speeches are ALWAYS the►SAME. The sky could be falling, but whoever the "commander"-in-a suit is@the time will always tell us dumb folk that it isn't.

2.  I WANT oBUMBa to sign an autograph for me, that way I can pick bullshit up with it & hand it right back to him.

I'm disgusted and my head hurts.  :-(

You guys have my sympathies.  Maybe I just have a smaller circle of facebook friends, but politics in Canada never seems to get to this level of bottom feeding.
Tell Bob #1 to adjust the color on the teevee.  He prolly thinks it's broken because he thinks the president is supposed to be white.

I thought it did exactly what it was supposed to do - communicate a plan (nonspecific - remember that hot air balloon joke about republicans and democrats where the democrats get made fun of for being too technical?) and project bipartisanship (purple tie, anyone?).  All the talking heads said it was going to disappoint progressives, because Obama's trying to be a centrist, and guess what: it did.

I will say, however, that every time I hear the phrase "clean coal" I want to beat my head against a wall.

I am so glad that I'm not the only one.  I'm from southern WV and almost my entire family still lives there.  Every time I go home there's a new hole where a mountain used to be and I hear more stories about people getting sick from contaminated water, etc.  My dad's cousin died in a mine accident last year (not the Upper Big Branch mine, although I know people who worked there who were not on shift when the explosion happened, but a different Massey operation) and he's one of many, many people I could name who have been killed or hurt mining or in mining related "incidents", including my own dad, both grandpas, uncles, etc.  Hell, the entire valley I grew up in got washed away in a flood caused by poorly maintained sludge ponds and dams in the early 70s, when my parents were in high school.  My dad lost his grandpa, his girlfriend, and his infant daughter in that flood, and barely got out alive himself.

Even if there was a way to remove the carbon emissions from burning coal, the sheer horror of getting it out of the ground and the devastation that mining leaves behind means that there is no such thing as "clean coal."  Every time I hear Obama or some other politician go on about that, I want to take them home with me and force them to talk to, and actually listen to, the people who are most affected by that industry and to actually look at what has happened to the landscape there, because of mining.

And sorry about the rant--this is just one of the many, many issues that gets me all worked up.

God.  I don't blame you.  I have a friend who made a movie about mountaintop removal - she's from WV too, and is really passionate about it.  It's called Black Diamonds.

The mining industry (and, interestingly, the way that the mineworkers' union has essentially been broken) is really something else.  Incredible.

I didn't watch it (I know, I know) but the one summary I managed to read before being interrupted by children mentioned that he avoided talk of climate change. I'm sorry, but all the talk about jobs and money and economy and war and schools rings very hollow to me if we don't have any hope of a functioning planet to actually live on for a few more centuries.

KS, how horrifying.

I only caught half of it, but Twitter made the whole thing more entertaining. I don't remember all of them, most were focused on salmon:

Keith Olbermann: And when the miners emerged, strangely, they all wanted smoked salmon #sotu
This popped up today and I am blown away by it. I don't even know what to say other than to comment on point one that Obama isn't qualified to be the president of anything which is like a big nanny nanny boo boo complete with a tongue stick out.

I thought it was the same old same old. I just liked how he kept using the term "invest" or "investment" while at the same saying he's going to cut spending. I'm sorry Bam-Bam, but "investing" is spending in terms of how the government handles things. He wants the government to "invest" in green technology. That's insulting to my intelligence. Just say "hey, dude, we're gonna use your tax money to subsidize windmills and solar technology that will eventually find the jobs ending up in China".

After a while, I had to shut it off. State of the onion speeches just piss me off, no matter who the president is.
