For those of you not blessed enough to live in northern California today is the official start to our IDIOT SEASON. Yes, it is the first day of real rain and apparently everyone pulled out their idiot card, checked to make sure they were up on their dues and hit the road. Not that they had driving manners to start with, but what little was there has been washed away by that mysterious moisture falling from the sky. I wanted to scream (and did a few times) at those not realizing that the beast that I drive does require that car length I leave between myself and the car ahead of me. It IS NOT intended to be a nice little spot for you to pop in your miniwhatever and slam on the brakes! Thank goodness I'm well insured.

Ugh. I thought that just happened in southern California. Being from Seattle, I find it hilarious and maddening at the same time.

I'm also especially amused when people call to cancel something, or to ask if I still plan on going, because it's raining. What? It's not like there's a fire or a mudslide or a piece of fallen freeway in the way. It's RAIN, people! Just RAIN!
I don't know about ICthruU, but I'm definitely not arguing against the rain. I LOVE the rain and am anxiously awaiting its arrival this afternoon (except for the massive mudslides expected not far from us because of recent wildfires...sigh). Anyway, it's just the people's reaction to the rain that's irritating. It's freaking ridiculous.
Texas is the same way. You know those little capsules that you put in water and they turn into foam animals? It's like that. Just add water - instant idiots.
We usually get stupidity on the first real snowy day of the season up here... takes a few days for everyone to remember how to drive in winter.
That's like Winter in D.C.
I've found people get grumpy in Seattle when it rains too - suddenly everyone's in a hurry and mad you're in their way. It's not that they want to go faster; it's more that they're mad that the presence of other cars on the road interferes with their excessive safety.
ICThrouU- i am so with you on this fact. people turn into raving idiots. the worst part is, because we go so long between rains all of the oil comes up from the tarmac and makes the roads very slippery. i've gotten in a few accidents because people just don't pay attention to space between cars.

i'm staying in today.
kommish -- that's hilarious! And totally fits. Yet it's not how I remember Seattle. I'm really curious to see what other cultural shifts have happened since I last lived there 15 years ago...

Good idea. If I recall we're practically neighbors. Stay off the Sunrise bridge. Complete lunatics!!

Oh, I'm not complaining about the rain. I miss a good thunderstorm (or thunderboomer if you ask the WeeOne). Back home (TX) we would watch them roll in, but here in Nor Cal it's not the same.

Well, I don't know if people were afraid of the speed limit 15 years ago, but they sure are now! I don't mind, because I'm a slow driver, but the life duet goes crazy.

Oh, I get what you're saying. Yes, yes, 15 years ago, 25 years ago, people always went the speed limit when it wasn't raining and a little (or a lot) slower if it was. I love it. Alan thinks it's quaint.
