Alright kids.  it's time again for the annual New Year Roll Call.  At least, i think it's annual.  i recall doing this before a few times.

I'm especially looking at you lurkers.  O_O  tell us a little about yourself and your family.  For us seasoned veterans, let's refresh my memory 'cause it sucks.  Tell us how old the kid/kiddos are now.  What are the kids into?  What is your latest thing?  Any big changes coming your way this year?  Or if you prefer, tell us something else.

I'm just trying to get this board a little more active.  Since so many of us are friends on FB, I feel like OS has gotten a little slow.  I miss it here.  I check in all the time, but I don't comment enough.  I'll work on that.

So, I'll start.  I'm mom to 2 boys.  The Dictator, who will be 7 in a few days; and RoRo who is 2 and some change.  The Dictator is really into Doctor Who right now (and yeah, so am I), puzzles, and activity books.  RoRo is all about books, his new play kitchen, and music.  specifically, theme songs to Doctor Who, and whatever Star Trek my husband is watching.  It's so funny to see him run into the room when the closing credits start and sing along.  :)

As far as big changes go, we're going to be 2 years out of bankruptcy come March and so we will attempt to buy a house.  The good news is, because my husband is a cop we qualify for the Good Neighbor program through HUD and if approved we will be able to buy a house for 50% of the price if we stay for 3 years. yes, 50%.  the housing market is still so depressed here in CA it is possible that we could get a great house with some land for about $200k or less.  here's to hoping!!

also, I think I might give quitting smoking another go.  it scares me shitless for some reason, but I can't keep this up.  I'd like to be around long enough to retire part of the year in Scotland.  of course, I'll actually have to have a job to retire from... but that's just a technicality.

ready, set, GO!

Well, there's no part of Canada that's as nice as California in the winter but Vancouver is positively balmy by my standards. Even Toronto is pretty nice, weather-wise. That said, people in Nunavut probably think we have it pretty easy down here :)

Thanks for posting Zealflyer!  "the cold part of Canada"?  isn't it all pretty fucking cold?  :D  i'm in the moderate part of California (no snow, but chilly in the winter) so i guess most places seem pretty cold to me.  We have a few Canadians around these here parts and an Aussie or 2 as well.

Welcome!

Unless you get below -10 (centigrade) on a regular basis, I can't justify calling it "cold".  That rules out the most populated area of Canada, which is south/central Ontario and Quebec.  But yes, there are parts of Canada that are pretty mother-f*cking cold.  Like Winterpeg, Manitoba.  Nunavut.  Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

I forgot to add that my son is in speech therapy (while we're discussing he unique fabric of our families). He was a super-late talker (very few words close to 3) and still has a...ahh...unique way of talking. I can't remember the actual term they used when they assessed him, but lets just say that he's pretty freakin' tough for the majority of people to understand. Part of this is his actual enunciation of words and part of it is that he insists on using his own made-up words part of the time (and then doesn't understand why people don't get that a OOOOOO is a fire truck). So it's off to speech therapy appointments we go every two weeks. And he thinks it's great because he gets stickers.

OK, I stepping forward as one of those lurkers you were looking for. (Though I've been doing more posting and less lurking as of the past couple of months.) My family and I live in the cold part of Canada in a neighbourhood that many people think are crazy for living in (two gun incidents since we moved here) in an old turn-of-the-century house that may or may not be falling down. I work from home, doing marketing for a small publishing company and my (common-law) hubby works in a kitchen from May to Sept. We have two kids: a four year old boy who loves horsies and firetrucks and making art and a fifteen month old daughter who is sweet and lovely, but probably the most stubborn baby I have ever met. Life is generally chaotic and mostly good.

Except for this year. Can't speak for Nunavut, but Winterpeg is not living up to it's name!

No kidding right? I grew up in Winterpeg and was talking to my dad and he said there was no snow to speak of this year. I remember the blizzard of '86 when my uncle had to crawl up the 2nd story window of my grandparents' house to dig out the door.

But I live in Vancouver now. Much more pleasant. But I mock people who have huge parkas on at 3C.

Kiwi and I are on the opposite end of the spectrum, temperature wise. Until it hits 3 digits here, it's not hot. It seems really wrong to go out to get your mail and think to yourself, "wow, it's much cooler today" when it's 92 F. (33 C)

I moved here almost five years ago from Washington State, so I've lost all my ability to deal with cold. Once it hits 50 F (10 C), I need a sweater. And probably a jacket. And...*horror* SOCKS!

My father, who is still up north, enjoys calling me just to ask me what the temperature is.

Eh, no worries.  I did have "andromeda" for a while--all lower case--but I figured people would get us mixed up.  Which could be amusing, you know, but probably annoying more than anything else.  Besides, "andromeda" was my handle on a now-extinct gaming board in high school, and I wouldn't want the guys who thought I was so cool and tough back then to find out what I'm doing with my time these days.

If I recall Rommie, I joined very shortly before you.  and i think it had to be back in '07.  yeah, because D was about 2.  so kinda sorry about already having your handle.  but it just goes to show how great of friends we could be IRL.  :)

I spoke too soon. It's freakin' cold out today!

I've been largely absent since the change over... but OS was a sanity saver when the Tinyness (now nearly 5) was a baby. The last couple of years the Tinyness has been in preschool and I've gone back for my bachelors in accounting, I will graduate this summer and Tinyness will start kindergarten in the fall. We also just spent two months in India visiting S's family and hanging out. Cheers!

Pocket Amazon!  yay!  I'm glad to see you back here.  :)  i see your drive-bys on FB.  Congrats on graduating soon!  That is wonderful.  It's tough to do school with a wee one.  Good job!

Have you and shreddd made it over to see Bliss Dance at Treasure Island yet?  I would love to come down that way and see her.  I think this summer is calling for an adventure to SF for a picnic under the sculpture and the voyage to the Exploratorium.  are you down?  :)

Hey Everybody!!

I'm still alive and so are the kids - I think. Well they are both TEENAGERS!!!! now so maybe they qualify as zombies? There's usually alot of mumbling and shuffling  - zombies right? Yeah, thats what I'm going with.

So, still an insurance agent (sucks) but I'm back to teaching little kids how to ride big horses and back to riding my  horse.

Oh - the year I spent on crutches? A thing of the past - I can walk again! just not in high heels, or platforms, or on un-even ground. Sucks but I do have a really good excuse to not run "oh sorry, I'd love to run 20 miles with you but my ortho said if I mess up all his hard work he's going to reposses my leg".

Trying to get back into the swing of being a real live person again not just a doped up blob that cant do anything but sit on the bed with icepacks and watch mind numbing tv.
