Let's all give thanks we didn't give birth at Jamestown Hospital

Good christ - have people seen this horrifying piece about how the wrong choice of bagel let the state take their baby away?

Hey - I used to work for the ACLU of PA. Proud to see them taking this on.
yeah, i heard about this. terrible terrible! i've heard of drug testing when a baby is born, but i thought it only applied to mothers that had a recent history of drug abuse. do some places have mandatory drug testing of all moms? that seems a little "big brother-ish" to me.
What a terrible terrible thing to do to those parents. That hospital should be really ashamed of itself.
I'll just offer that when I was writing my undergrad thesis on fetal citizenship ten years ago, I researched hospitals in South Carolina that had recently started mandatory drug testing of pregnant women for crack cocaine. Except that only public hospitals did the tests, and they weren't testing for any other drugs or for alcohol or tobacco use. The result was that, as of my writing, 21 women had been criminally prosecuted for (no joke) trafficking drugs to a minor), and of those 21, 19 were black and all were poor. Yet another example of anti-choice and anti-woman rhetoric fucking up families.
Meth and cocaine is fine in SC but they can't have crack users keeping their kids. The writing on that wall is pretty plain.

For sure. Especially when the science at the time was starting to demonstrate that heavy alcohol use was looking more and more like it was at least as detrimental to fetal development as crack, but was much more common in whiter, wealthier communities than crack. And, y'know, the whole criminal prosecutionon top of taking the babies away thing.

In other big ups to the ACLU, however, they just successfully litigated/lobbied an end to the shackling of pregnant inmates during delivery here in WA. They're awesome.

I wonder how many hospitals have mandatory drug testing for all pregnant patients. What a terrible story!
Whar would happen if a mom refused to give pee, would she be sent away in labor?
Considering a hospital/cps took a baby away from a mother for months for refusing to sign a consent form for a c-section when she was just starting her labor (no particular reason, it was standard procedure at the hospital) because she was "endangering her child," I suspect they'd see that as grounds for removing the kid as well.
