we found out a few weeks ago we are having a girl, i am so happy i could explode...
my question is this..
how accurate are these things? i hear all of the time that people are told one sex, only to have the baby and its the opposite. they said they were 99% sure they didnt see any parts in there.... we already started buying girl stuff so whats done is done, but i am still curious...

My doctor got it wrong with Max. The ultrasound machine was crap and it was fairly early (about 17 weeks). She said she was 80% sure which was weird. I think she was going on not seeing a penis and not the presence of labia. We had another ultrasound done at 24 weeks but his legs were crossed. Sailor was certain he was a girl but I had my doubts. Everyone in our families were certain of a girl too. So we got lots of pink stuff and picked out a girls name, Sophie.
We are going in for our 20 week ultrasound next week. I'll only be sure if I can make out the goods.

That being said with the advances they've made even in four years and the fact they were looking at specific parts and not the absence of a penis I would trust an ultrasound tech.
I suppose it does depend on the ultrasound machine and the experience of the technician. They really shouldn't be looking for neither penis nor labia--they should be able to see either!

We had an ultrasound around 12 weeks that screened for increased risk for Down's Syndrome and I could tell that the fetus had the same mouth/chin I do. He was 7 cm big at the time! Multiple people could make out the features, so I wasn't crazy :-)
He really has my mouth and chin.
I'd really doubt that one of those machines could be wrong about the presence of labia or a penis.

I'm going in for an ultrasound tomorrow at 21 weeks, but we're going to (hopefully) keep the baby's sex a surprise. I'll be looking though!

Congrats on the new one, papaPost.
I had the same indecision when Ebay was predicted as "probably a girl" at 17 weeks. The tech wouldn't say with certainty becasue there hadn't been a clear shot, but she said that a penis would've been evident at some point during the baby acrobatics. I avoided buying pink until the 32nd week ultrasound (which we didn't get to), and we continued to debate both girls' and boys' names just in case. But in the end, the trained tech was right. No pee-pee=boy.
Congrats papaPost! Either way!

El D 'presented' frequently during ultrasounds so it was no mystery...but because we knew there was a small % that even all the 'presenting' could be wrong we went color neutral and picked out both boy & girl names.
They told us our daughter was a boy 2 times! The 20 week ultra, again 6 weeks later, and then finally, 2 weeks before my due date they said, "Are you ready for your little girl?" I thought the tech had just made a slip, but then she looked at my chart and confirmed that there were conflicting genders!

I thought I had a hermaphadite! Or my daughter had some HUGE, swollen labia that somehow looked like a penis...turns out it was probably just that, but termporary during her development. She was born with normal parts and all was well. Since she was my third (and would have been the 3rd boy) we didn't have a shower or buy much of anything. We only had to change her name. I was stoked and truly believe I prayed the penis off.
