we found out a few weeks ago we are having a girl, i am so happy i could explode...
my question is this..
how accurate are these things? i hear all of the time that people are told one sex, only to have the baby and its the opposite. they said they were 99% sure they didnt see any parts in there.... we already started buying girl stuff so whats done is done, but i am still curious...

From what I understand, they're fairly accurate. I imagine it might be a bit more accurate if they predict it's a boy, because they are going off of a presence of parts, rather than an absence. They've got some snazzy technology now - I haven't heard of a gender mix-up in a while.

I give my baby brother hell because he was a girl up until he was born, and he was a well-monitored baby, as our mom was 35 at the time. (This was 20+ years ago.) For being so damn modest in utero, he has been quite the exhibitionist ex utero.

Girls are fun. Congrats! (I have the appropriate liberal disdain for rigid gender lines and whatnot, but some of the foofy girl stuff made me lose my mind with cuteness.)
Girls are "predicted" on the ultrasound by the presence of labial folds, iirc. So it's not absence of penis.
Amnio is very reliable because it looks at actual DNa but ultrasounds are not always as reliable. when my son was born I shared a room with a woman who was told she was having a daughter based on ultrasound results. She had a boy and refused to have anything to do with the baby. appearantly they had pink nursery and a closet full of pink clothes.
About a year and a half ago I saw girl parts on the ultrasound, so I'm with Wookie that it's not just the absence of anything. All three of ours were dead on.
Despite the number of ultrasounds I had we didn't know because the boys crossed their legs or rolled so we couldn't see anything.

My cousin's doctor mistook a girl for a boy about 4 years ago. I don't know how far the technology has come since then but it definitely happens.
When I was pregnant with my daughter, they told us the same thing. Her legs were crossed, they spent forever trying to get her to move. The final word was 90% she would be a girl because, "If there were anything there she couldn't close her legs like that." I didn't believe them. I didn't buy anything for a girl until she was born.

She is the only girl to be born to our family on my husband's side, so I was certain they were probably wrong right until she was here.
I've heard of gender mix ups sort of recently, but for the most part gender determination by ultrasound is very accurate (just like the ultrasound technician said, 99%). For girls the labia are visible by ultrasound, so it's not the absence of a penis that the technician would look for.

Yay for baby girls, I can only dream of having one someday!! :-)
I know girls have parts! I was painting with broad strokes. Oh, you science-minded, technical people. :)
We've had two ultrasounds: the regular diagnostic one at 20 weeks and the spiffy 4D one at 26 weeks. Both technicians had no doubt that it was a girl. They did see the girl "bits" which were described as three lines for the labia. We have pictures. I feel that it is a girl but I think we are going to hold off on the baby shower (not that we need anything!) until after the baby is born. We're going to reuse all the gender neutral stuff from himself anyway!

I did have a friend back in January who had her second boy after being told it was going to be a girl. But she only had the one diagnostic ultrasound at 20 weeks, which can be a bit of a guess at that point. And they didn't do any blood tests.

And Congrats! Don't forget to get the Oracle to add you to the front page!
Oh yeah! Post your due date and I'll add it to the Baby Boom box on the front page!
They're pretty darn accurate.
Despite my fervent wishes that they were wrong about my baby being a girl, they were right...now I wouldn't trade her for anything!

CONGRATS!
