she would have had a party for me, that's for sure.

I ran across this while looking for baby shower partyware, and instantly thought, "WTF?". Now I'm curious...am I missing out on yet another reason to throw a party? Lord knows I love to entertain, but I mean really, what would you even serve at a party for this? Salsa? At least I've got a good 7 or so years to start planning for my 4 year old.

Period Party

I am certain I would have suffered irreversible psychological damage had my mother thrown me a party like this.
Wow. That is just bizarre.
I wouldn't have called it a party, but some friends and I had a ... ritual? rite of passage? ... for one friend's daughter when she got her period. It was lovely and I was amazed at how the girl seemed to take it in (I was going to say "soak it up" but I thought that would be in poor taste). It was less about, "Rah rah! You're bleeding!" and more about negotiating the transition to womanhood. And eating chocolate.

I think our society has too few conscious rites of passage outside of religious institutions. But I would not throw a "period party" with salsa, strawberries, red plates and red cups.
That's just so gross.
Haha! Me too, Kiwi.

Also, some of the messages on there were "respect yourself" and "abstinence".... not that teaching self-respect is a bad thing, but paired with the abstinence message, the whole thing seemed creepy, like a lead in to a purity ball or some bullshit.
Oh, wow. If I remember correctly, I was pretty proud and excited about getting my first period, but I don't think throwing a party over it is the best course of action. I'm all for celebrating the onset of womanhood between a mother and her daughter, but throwing an all out party (with themed decorations even!) just seems weird... and, like kiwi said, possibly psychologically damaging.

ETA - Now, using this for a baby shower, on the other hand, could be kind of funny.
creepy creepy creepy. i think it is a far stretch from a quincenera (i don''t know how to spell that). but Oracle is right. we have far too little rites of passage for young people as a cultural thing. sure, for religious reasons like a bar or bat mitzva (i don't think i know how to spell that either), but not for the majority of people. we do kind of have the sweet 16 thing, but somehow i think its a little different.

either way though, the period party is creepy. however, a menopause party could be pretty funny. i would have to say a lot of margaritas and a pool would be in order.
I'm all about rituals and whatnot, but this is just too bizarre. I would have died of mortification. Go to the company's website - the party pack includes a "Pin the Ovaries" game. I'm in this weird place between horror and hilarity.
I'm not doing that for the Little Miss. I would have been mortified had it been done for me. As it was, I was not real pleased to be getting it. I ran track, and my track shorts were tiny. Sanitary supplies...aren't.

I'm all over that menopause party though...
Oh dear god that is so wrong.
I didn't go as far as to the company's website, but that's pretty strange. I was horrified that my mother told people. To me it was private, like going to the bathroom. But then again, we all brag when our kids learn to be potty trained. Perhaps this is just another milestone that deserves to be celebrated. I just don't think I'm there yet. I will let my daughter's cycle come and start in peace and only share with those she feels comfortable with.
