Lots of back-to-school related e-mails all of a sudden. (I know, some of you have been back since mid-August. But in our school district, we start after Labor Day. Any earlier would be cruel, considering summer weather in Seattle doesn't even start until July sometime!)

Last year at this time, I was a bundle of chocolate-covered nerves as The Boy prepared to start kindergarten. I'm feeling only a fraction of that anxiety now, but it's still a big adjustment, coming down from our nice, easy little summer and locking back into polite society. He's been assigned a good teacher, and many of his friends from last year are in the same class. I guess this coming week I'll need to touch base with that teacher and do the whole "Here's the deal with my kid" thing.

Meanwhile, Little Girl will be going to co-op preschool again. I'm looking forward to that. I'm also looking forward to not being on the Board this year. More free time, in theory. Let's see how productively I can use it!

How about you? How's your back-to-school transition going?

So far, so good. They did parent-teacher conferences already, so there was time before classes started to discuss any issues your kid/kids might have. We found out Little B won't have to spend the whole day with the same teacher - which is a teacher that he doesn't like, and that he butts heads with constantly. So that's a relief. He's been pretty happy when I pick him up, so I think this first week has gone over well. I just hope it's a trend that can continue.
I am homeschooling through high school (some days I think I must be crazy) so I have been breaking out the books to get organized. The schedule is ready, curriculum is here ... not lesson planning gets underway!
We're not going back to school so much as transitioning to a new school this coming week. The little man starts a new part-time daycare (FP, it's the one on that wonky corner between Kidd Valley and the playfields), but will be with his newly-available teacher from the old school, who left the school the same day the little man did, the remaining two days a week. Next week, however, should be a clusterfuck, as there are two transition days, then three days home with me because new school is randomly closed the Friday before Labor Day, and the life duet set the newly-available teacher up for the wrong days that week. SIGH.

I think the little man will be fine, though. He's pretty flexible, and our next door neighbor, who he LOVES, will be in his class.
We moved this summer so we're in a new school district in addition to a new school.

1st Kid started 3rd grade. In all grades previous 1st Kid has had some mediocre teachers but the ones this year seem to really have it together. I was saddened by how much 1st Kid's other school sucked because it is where I attended elementary and it was a far far far better place when I was there.

2nd Kid started Pre-K which broke The Companion's heart... he cried on the first day. She really likes school and looks forward to going everyday.

Thus far I big carton heart the new school. The new school is a Fine Arts Magnet so as a part of the daily instruction the kids have 45 minutes of fine arts study. 2nd Kid will rotate through all the offerings (band, piano, orchestra, dance, choir, and theatre) and 1st Kid will get pick two to spend the year in. The building is fairly new and just opened its doors in 2008-09 school year (I was surprised by them having multi-media classrooms). I was taken aback by how over the top excited about and involved the principles are in the kid's academic lives because at our other school the principle barely had a pulse. They are very big into individualized learning and doing more than just teaching the state tests. This place is my elementary school wet dream. I only wish wed moved sooner.
Oh, cool! I toured that daycare when I was still working and I remember really liking it. It had a nice, crunchy feel to it. The little man should be happy there.

Oh, and Kiwi that school sounds amazing!

Great so far...we don't start until after Labour Day.

Looks like we have the shittastic bus situation we had last year again though...I knew it was coming but it doesn't suck any less. #1 gets on the bus at 6:43. #3 gets on the bus at 8:04 and #2 gets on the bus at 8:43. #2 and #3 go to the same school but for some bullshit reason the primary and junior classes have different starting times - it's only a K-5. Ridiculous. Makes me yearn for Texas where we were close enough to walk them to school....but not really.
The boys only have had two half days but #1 son (13) has already started safety patrol and tried out for the fall musical and #2 son (10) is fully engaged in soccer (travel team) so we are rocking and rolling. I'm working full time at the boys' school this year (half time teaching, half time jack of all trades) so it will probably be a harder transition for me than the boys...any one have a ready made syllabus for middle school study skills course that meets once per week for 12 weeks? No? Me neither...but I have until Monday to figure one out.
I bet the Internet does!

La la la, I can't hear you! It. Is. Summer. The sky is NOT gray. I did NOT just turn the heat on. Still. Summer! I am not shivering.
If you'd like you can have my current weather. We had a cool front come through this weekend so the temps were in the mid to high 90's.

I am totally willing to trade.

I would die. I am a fragile little flower. We get three days of upper 90's and cities start opening up cooling centers to the public!

Hi FP! Last night we went to the "all-school" playdate but it was mostly new kindergarteners. I chatted with a few fellow first-grade parents and found out the much-beloved temporary PE teacher is back full-time. Also, all the teachers had art training this summer from local professional artists. Plus, we have a dance teacher this year. So I'm pretty stoked! Plus J will be at preschool 4 days a week. I can't begin to say how happy that makes me.
