How could they not have predicted this?
Hubby just called. He's an adjunct professor of grad-level classes at a well known conservatory in Maryland. His supervisor just let him know that, because of a new MD law passed with the intention of ensuring part-time teachers get benefits starting at 50% of full time, that his classes next year will be cut back to less than 50% of full time. Another teacher is caught up in this as well. They will then hire 2 more professors to cover the remaining classes.
Seriously, could lawmakers not see this one coming? The responsible thing would have been to write in a grandfather clause.
So much for being able to pay our bills next year. IF we make it through the summer when he doesn't earn a paycheck. We also have to consider if him driving an hour each way three days a week is even worth it anymore, which means he may have to look for a job other than teaching. He has no marketable skills outside of music and academia. FML.

Oh yuck. Yuck, yuck, yuck. That's screwed up and I'm sorry. That was going to happen to me if I hadn't gotten my TT job as well. I would have been in the exact same position. How could law makers not have known that? I'm sure they did. I'm sure they don't care. After all, higher ed budgets are being destroyed in most states.

Jesus christ! Bastards. They knew EXACTLY what was going to happen. They just don't care. It's not their jobs on the line, it's their re-election they care about. And all the lobbying dollars they might miss out on.

That sucks.
We're in a similar situation over here. Budget cuts mean that the university is cutting half the people with my job campus wide and we're all waiting to see who gets the ax. I'm not in as bad a position as I could be, since I was part time before I got this full time one and I'm also one of two people who teaches three sections of my big intro physics class (and the other guy is tenured and *won't* take on another section of it--he's already refused to do so) *and* I can teach/have taught every 100-200 level intro class the department offers and that the tenured guys don't want to teach, so I'd probably be dropped back to part time before I was let go entirely. But still, it sucks mightily in higher ed right now.
And I'm in the same boat as HBD's hubby, in that teaching is really my only marketable skill and I'm not licensed to do it in a high school (not that I'd be able to get a job there anyway, what with even bigger budget cuts that we're dealing with).

This pisses me off so huge! You know, sadly the people who do the greatest leg work to write and pass these bills tend to be the legislative aids - who may or may not have a law degree (usually don't because the pay isn't great), as many of the representatives they work for do. If the actual law makers would take ten minutes to read the bill before they pass it out of committee - this could all be avoided. And for all of those who bitch about the teachers union - this is why the lobbying arm of the union exists (but the union lobbyists I've met in our state capitol tend to be more focused on K-12 public education issues, not college level).
It's just sad. This is also another reminder that states should be working on finding their own solutions to the health care crisis - insuring all of their citizens - instead of singling out certain individuals and giving them a target on their back for the antis.

Johns Hopkins will not grandfather any of the previous adjuncts in. In order to avoid paying into their retirement as required by new MD law, all non-full-timers are being cut to three classes or less. Since Hubby drives 120 miles three days a week to teach there, he'd not have any net income after travel expenses.
He just quit.

I am so sorry that is happening to your family. I know we try to think the best of people, but even the most naive of us could have predicted that people would get screwed by a law that was supposed to be helping them.
Yuck.
