i have adhd/ a learning disability---now diagnosed all official!!
the gre bulletin for 'test takers with disabilities' suggests you ask your prospective institution to waive the test requirement and consider my application based on other information

I am not sure how I should go about doing that. Do I just call up the chair of the department and ask? then I go all what if....on myself
what if they ask for more information?
how much information shall I provide?
should I be wary of giving my name, so they can identify me as a person with a disability

ack

Is there a Students with Disabilities office? I would start by going there and explaining the situation. Ask them what accomodations might be available for you. In most cases, if you don't identify yourself as having a disability and provide the documentation you can't get any help.
thanks, tea---that was very helpful
I did call the student support services director and she gave me lots of good advice! I am going to write a letter to the chair. wish me luck!
I was going to recommend contacting Student Support Services but Tea beat me to it. They are also going to be a strong ally for as long as you're enrolled in the University.
Excellent! Good luck ferret!

I've never disclosed until I was in a specific class that I thought I wouldn't be able to get by without the accommodations. But it is your legal right (IIRC) to disclose at this time and to be granted appropriate accommodation.

But nothing beats talking to someone who knows that system :-) Good luck!
I really wish I didn't have to disclose at this time but taking the GRE was torture for me without accommodations and won't be a picnic with them either. I've got one Masters degree but because competition is so fierce to get into school these test scores are weighted higher. I literally went through undergrad feeling like I was insane and thus got a 2.7 gpa, that doesn't help my chances much either. I couldn't have gotten my 3.8 in grad school without my accommodations.

The fact that the GRE says in their bulletin that you may want to ask your institution to waive the test requirement is a big red flag for me. Because my disability is complicated/ severe I believe my test result would be flagged anyway. And it never hurts to ask!
