Family Life Class in Virginia Public Schools -- God Help Me

Sooooooooooo......

I have a lot on my plate with both boys this year with actual academics and teacher issues, so I have given very little attention to the few weeks of  "Family Life" class that Older Son took this year (9th grade) as part of PE/Health.

We are in Virginia so I know what he is learning is pretty lame -- I think they are still doing abstinence only lessons -- but we talk at home so I haven't worried too much. He's got more information from me than he's ever, ever wanted. Poor kid. :)

Anyhow, we wrapped up the school year and he and I were having a rare free-flowing discussion in the car (best discussions with teenage boys always seem to happen when both parties are facing forward and not looking at each other)... and he mentioned that his Family Life teacher had given him this great advice.... to paraphrase....

"When boys get a girlfriend, their dads are all... 'that's my boy!'... but when girls get a boyfriend, dads are all like, 'let me go clean my shotgun!'"

His regular PE teacher is wonderful, so I assumed Family Life was going much better than this. However, it seems that the boys have to take Family Life from a male teacher, and his PE teacher is a woman so he and the other boys were pulled into a different section for these few weeks. I should have known this and paid more attention, but it was so low on the priority list this year.

Can I just say again how glad I am that this school year is over??

What, moms don't own guns?

In our house it's karate. Sorry their father fits the gym teacher's stereotype.

I'm not sure I understand where the "advice" part is in that statement.  It's a stereotype, obviously, but it's also a very common occurence, regardless of how inappropriate and flat-out stupid it is.  I understand why you're upset--there's no reason his teacher to have made a statement like that--but I can't see what the teacher was trying to get at.

The closest thing to a "family life" class I had was at an extremely conservative Baptist school.  It was also very...special.

I know, right?? :)
