Hey all, hoping you have some ideas here. Ducky got his 12-month vaxs 2 weeks ago and at the same time was diagnosed w/functional diarrhea. His weight percentile was 95th at birth, 47th six months ago, and 11th now. Not sure if all that is relevant to what's going on now, but it might be.

A few days after his shots, he got a mild fever and cough/congestion and his previously-huge appetite dropped off. I didn't think anything was unusual and the fever went away after a couple days. This past Monday, it came back. It was 101-102 for 2-3 days but yesterday was mostly good, and his appetite has increased a bit, so I thought he was on the mend.

This morning he woke up at 5:00 and cried for 3 1/2 hours. Still no fever, though, so I took him to daycare and all reports by the end of the day were that he was in good spirits all day long. He was chipper in the car till we got home and now has been fussy most of the evening. He fell asleep around 7:00 or 7:30 and woke up around 9:00 this evening crying, crying, crying -- the I'm-in-pain kind of crying.

We've done everything we can think of: Tylenol, teething tablets, antihistamine, gas drops, nursing, water, feeding, bathing, diapering, holding, rocking. The best we can get is a few minutes of peace when I'm holding him.

Any ideas? I know lots of people deal with this kind of stuff with colicky newborns but in a 12-month-old it seems pretty unusual.

Well...our Peace Corps training was mostly along the lines of "Sterilize your drinking water" and "Look for a sunken fontanel," so aside from thoroughly informing me what horrible things chronic diarrhea can do to a body, it obviously didn't do me much good with my own kid.

It's been since June, about 2-4 times a day, occasionally 5, and according to Dr. Google it could last "months to years" but there's "no known cause" -- it's just how some kids are. However, between wookie's and sarah's cautionary tales, I'm going to go into his 15-month appointment in December (assuming the diarrhea is still going on) armed with a lot more information and assertiveness about testing. Especially since he's had this recurring canker sore for about the same amount of time, which I'm now finding out could be linked to malabsorption and/or inflammatory bowel disease.

I'm trying not to freak out but honestly the dehydration kind of heightened my freak-out meter. This is when more research and documentation kicks in.

The puking blood ended up not being serious at all...which is the frustrating part. We had no idea until we had racked up a bill and they told us the intense crying from the ear infection must've torn something--causing all the blood in her vomit. It was weird. I won't lie.

Chronic diarrhea, huh? Ick and poor Ducky! (And poor you guys!) How does something like that happen? Really? Sorry you guys have to deal with that, and I can see why the dehydration is a freaky thing. I don't have much to add. I think it's a huge bonus that you worked with these issues in the Peace Corps, but it's not like you wanted to apply those skills to your own offspring, huh?

Not sure if it's at all the same thing, and I didn't really process the other thread completely to see what has been suggested so forgive me if this is the umpteenth time you've heard this: We were told Reid had "toddler's diarrhea" several times when it seemed that she had diarrhea for no reason...lasting for long-ish periods of time, but never forever. (Both Reid and CLB are at the bottom of the weight spectrum. Actually, CLB just fell off.) Each time we were given this random diagnosis, our ped. would suggest a super fancy probiotic called Bio K (used in hospitals, available in our natural food store). It's liquid. Comes in a variety of options (dairy free being the one we got). We'd administer it for a while, things would improve.

Don't know if that's what's going on with Ducky. Other probiotics never did a damn thing for us. Bio K seemed to be a fix-it for us.

Geez Louise! I hope SOMETHING is a fix-it for you!
Yeesh. I hate to say it, but I'm glad it was just an ear infection. We had a blood-in-urine scare awhile back (coinciding with a telescoping bowels scare - both turned out to be nothing) and it was no good. On the flip side, Children's Hospital in Seattle has lots of good videos for kids to watch while the doctors "wait and see" what the fuck is going on with them.

I hope you get the excessive poop worked out too. That sounds awful. Poor all of you guys.
You sound like you are exactly where I would be. Urrrr. Arrrr. I frequently wish things could just be simpler.

Sorry you guys are going through this. I hope you feel supported in your next well check. I think it's absolutely appropriate to ask for testing at this juncture.

I've never said this before--but my wish for Ducky is that he stays one plump and juicy--hydrated--little man.
