Offsprung

An irreverent, inclusive, alternative parenting community

I found out about Offsprung through the movie review site Pajiba a long long time ago.  When I first started checking the site I really enjoyed reading Flea's Lock the Bedroom Door column and have been missing it lately.

Well there is a new column on Pajiba related to my favorite subject "sex".  There are only a few entries right now and some are quite provocative, but this one really threw me for a loop.  Apparently there is a doctor in Florida who decided to perform clitoral reductions on children and then did follow up research to see what there sensitivity level was with a “medical vibratory device”.

It's people like that who make me regret that Dexter isn't real. Or me.
My sentiments exactly

Terrible. I can't imagine how any parent agreed to this, how any researcher thought it was a valid study, etc.
I can kind of see how a parent would agree, but only if the doctor was as much of a manipulative asshole as he is in my head. Don't you think that if some doctor said your daughters clitoris was too big and large clitoris's were linked to yeast infections, cancer, whatever that you might consider getting a very minor procedure to make her perfect? I can only imagine how easy it would be to convince someone for who popularity is as important as anything else.

This seems to be a case of a person in a position of power and authority taking advantage of the trust that these minors and their parents put into him in order to perform a twisted experiment.
Yes, you're right, the parents were probably easily convinced by the manipulative doctor. In my case, I'd be reading up every research article about the condition before letting anyone do anything drastic like that to my child--but I'm a researcher.
I still can't imagine that they agreed to the vibrator stimulation part.
