My daughter recently went to a concert. She brought home a pamphlet from PETA.ORG
What I read in that pamphlet horrified me, as a human being. As I read about the mass abuse and slaughtering of animals for the purpose of comercial meat I couldnt help but to think:

When a person is depressed and/or suffering abuse chemicals in the brain are released in excess and can cause countless debilifying cns (central nervous system) conditions. CNS disorders can cause anything from simple twitches to complete personality changes. I know this must be true for other mammals as well. Haven't you ever read about or seen on tv the neurotic dog that takes prozac?

If so wouldn't eating these animals at least contribute to the alarming rate of mental/physical illnesses in our society?

Well, I think that PETA causes depression and chemical abuse. Those people are totally off their meds and just need to get a grip.  PETA is a cult and I the last person that handed me PETA pamphlets got an ear full. If the school was passing them out I'd be on the phone with the district office.

Do vegetarians have lower rates of depression and mental illness?

Good question, DLBK.  It's hard to find a good study on that.

Sarah Palin eats a lot of wild game meat, and she's pretty bonkers.  I don't see a correlation between stressed animals and nutty carnivorous people.

I don't agree with a lot of PETA's tactics (especially the exploitation of women's bodies). I do agree with the root beliefs though. And as to, "Those people are totally off their meds and just need to get a grip." I've never been on any kind of medication for personality or depression issues and am generally a well adjusted and contributing member of society. As far back as I remember on this forum have been various people ranting about how much they loathe and hate PETA and anyone who might associate with them, but frankly I cannot recall ever seeing any rants about how meat eaters are cultists who have medical disorders. Should I get on that?

Lots of people, myself included, are on medications for personality or depression issues and manage to be well adjusted and contributing members of society.  Many of us even manage to keep our grips, even when not on our meds.

Also, we're arguing with spam.

Hey mg - I always seem to run into the crazy peta people (as in free all the chickens from the egg farm, picket the local fair and scream at the 4-h kids who are raising market pigs, ect.) I know they are not all nuts and I totally respect the dedication to the meal planning.  I also know several meat eaters that I think are way worse than some peta people (really, a 5yr old out hunting bambi? ohhh, you hunt and eat bears? You made freaking racoon stew???!!!???).  I like the peta people/vegans/vegatarians that are not all up on my junk about food. When I go out with my vegan buddy I dont order meat because I respect her values but she also does not give me shit about eating a cheese pizza.

Kommis - I know its spam, I just had to type something.   And I dont really think that Peta cases depression and chemical imbalance.  but sometimes they do cause my blood pressure to go up.

Sorry Kommish. In my haste to defend animals rights people, I didn't phrase things as well as I could have. I apologize.

Hey man,

i was just askin a question...i am not a member of peta, but i am a member of the nutty people ON meds and I seem to do just fine. I think about wierd crap all the time, I just wanted to know what other "smart' people thought about the aforementioned. That pamphlet was the first time i ever heard of peta. I could care less if they are a cult or a bunch of brain dead christians. However, the things i seen and read in that pamphlet, would cause any human being with a heart/brain to be concerned. I do think that how we choose to treat our animals is a direct reflection on our evolution as a society and beyond.

We get a lot of random links from new members, that turn out to be spam, and not people actually wanting to join. You'll have to forgive our initial reaction - it's come from long experience. A lot of the folks on this site have been here for many years, and we tend to laugh about it. Perhaps it's better to re-phrase the question as to what influence the state of our food has on our mental health?

As for the PETA pamphlet you saw...well if any of that is true, and you are hunting and eating wild game instead of CAFO meat, you are probably doing yourself a favor anyway. We have vegetarians, vegans, and omnivores on this site. We are respectful of each others' decisions, and have long past hashed out those differences. No one here is going to harangue you for hunting. If you live 100 miles from anywhere, I imagine it's more efficient.

jomamma74,

Sorry if we misinterpretted your original posting. We have gotten other folks who sign up to put in one post with a particular agenda rather than to start a conversation. Since you didn't repost for a week, we assumed there wasn't a "real" person on the other end.

Welcome, and I hope you have a better experience from here on out.
