I know I've asked this before, but the Kid is a little older now (2ish), so we could use more suggestions.   We've been on a Dr. Seuss kick recently, but he's woefully short of girl characters. We have an Olivia book or two, but after getting Olivia and the Missing Toy and hating it, I'm a bit skeptical of Olivia going forward.   And I could change the pronouns on some characters, but I frequently just forget.  Plus, it is Hop on Pop; Hop on Mop just doesn't work!  So, what books are missing from our collection?

Bubble Trouble is a really fun book to read about an entire town helping a girl save her brother from floating away. It's one big tongue twister. By Margaret Mahy.
Robert Munch has a bit more gender variation.
We like the Little Critter series and Fancy Nancy. I hate Eloise - blech!

Then there is the Madeline books - old school but ok. Our favorite series right now are the Poppleton books by Cynthia Ryzant.
Little Girl's favorites these days include: Fancy Nancy, the Frances books, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake and some others from that series, and Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems. Good luck!
This is very sweet and I would totally buy it if it was available in book form.
Madeline! We love Madeline, all of them. All Margaret Wise Brown books, which aren't boy or girl, just good. I Love My Hair is a great book with a girl. The Frances books are good too. A Best Friend for Frances, etc. When Sophie Gets Angry and Brave Irene are good too. they may be for when she's closer to three, but they're great books. I'm not a huge fan of Olivia either. There's also this book that all of the kids in my son's school love called Pinkalicious. I'm not a huge fan (I don't mind reading it, but I do find the girl a bit grating), but his teachers love it and the the kids think it's great.
Abby from Sesame Street has a couple of books that Dani likes; she's 17 months old.

I agree with you about Seuss--but will add that the abstract animal things in his books are making it hard for me to teach her animals, I think it confuses her!
We've been reading a magazine called Babybug. Your local library might have it; it's full of girl characters. I think it would be a perfect match for his age. My 26 month old son totally loves it.
Me and my kiddo are liking the book The Princess Knight which we found on The Amelia Bloomer List/ Project
Ferret,

Thanks for posting that. I forgot about that list! Very, very useful.

I am also perusing Great Books for Girls, by Kathleen Odean and recommended by Mary Pipher. I haven't gotten anything from the book list yet but have marked a few to check out.

OMG, this is for older kids than yours Carmin but a friend just gave me "The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip." I'd never even heard of it. It's AWESOME. And the protagonist is a little girl named Capable, a true heroine.
