OK, so this is a pretty trivial subject compared to many of those expounded here, but let's talk hair. Both of my kids have extensive amounts of it - Mr. Questions' is super-thick and prone to bed-head, while Cozy's is long (down to her back at 20 months) and very fine. Great you say: let those little beings run free with their hair a-flowing. That's what I thought, except that they both seem to be really sensitive to sensory input and have no tolerance for hair in their faces. Sooo...haircuts. I used to give Questions really bad haircuts and then got sick of having people make snide comments about his bad haircuts. So I took him to an independent hairdresser who is close and cheap and could cut hair really fast. Everything was fine until the last time I took him, when Mr. Hairdresser decided we were now close enough buds to talk about all sorts of topics that made me fairly uncomfortable - like how kids are just being made into pussies these days by all this anti-bullying stuff. You really don't want to argue with the person cutting your kid's hair but...

Also, I tried to have Cozy's hair cut there and she threw a complete shit fit. The hairdresser said there was just no way she could cut her hair. So do I continue to take Questions to have his hair cut there, despite the fact that I'm starting to really dislike the guy? (He really does give him the perfect nondescript cut.) Do I just let Cozy's hair grow out? Does long girl's hair ever get less annoying? Do I give both of the kids ironic mullets? I'm at a loss here. Please share with me what you all do to keep the hair situation under control.

Check the insanity! (This is from Mother's Day and it has actually grown a whole shwack since then, and is just as wild.)

Oh, I'd get her a pixie cut - the pic I posted before was from when my daughter was about 3 1/2, but at about 18 months, her hair was more like Trouble's. In fact, I shaved her head up until she was a year old, because she essentially had the baby version of a comb-over. By then it was finally growing in more evenly, but we kept it short.  Here she is on her second birthday.

So do I continue to take Questions to have his hair cut there, despite the fact that I'm starting to really dislike the guy? (He really does give him the perfect nondescript cut.)

I'd have to go with no on this one.

I take 1st Kid to TGF to get his hair cut. He wears it no more than a half inch long and cuts there cost like $11 for a kid. Also they stylist there tend to have clippers that don't make that buzz noise he liked that a lot when he was a small kid and still enjoys the silence now at nearly 10 years old.

Do I just let Cozy's hair grow out?

I am a fan of a nice pixie cut. There is no combing involved and it can be washed quickly and easily.

Does long girl's hair ever get less annoying?

Hell no it does not. I comb waist length hair daily and it sucks ass. I wish now that I would have given her a the pixie cut she was too young to have an opinion about her hair. Now it is waist length and she is utterly in love with it. She cannot not fathom having so much as an inch taken off it.

Do I give both of the kids ironic mullets?

You could but when they are adults they will see photos of that hair.

This hair is the bane of my existence. I cannot wait until she is old enough to care for it without my assistance.

Wow, that's beautiful hair, but it sure looks like a lot of work. I was mostly kidding about the ironic mullet (although it's shocking how many people we know seem to think that this is a good idea for their kids). I'm definitely leaning towards the pixie cut for Cozy - if only I can make her sit still to get the damn haircut.

*I was trying to figure out what an iron mullet was.

Big O has super-thick hair, soft and shiny, but there's just so much of it! She had it long, but it would puff at the ends, so I got her layers and that helped. She's now grown out her bangs, and she looks more grownup (she's 10). Ebay's got Daddy's hispanic hair, less dense but rough-feeling and doesn't tame easily. She gers sprayed down a coule times a day for a redo on the control.

I driver 30 minutes to the nearest kids' salon, and that helps. They get lay on a padded counter to have their hair washed, watch cartoons while the stylists work, then they each get to pick some little.clips. it's not any more expensive than a barber, but it's worth the drive every two months. I'd recommend looking for one near you, and if there isn't one, do you have an iPad or a portable DVD player to get Cozy to sit still?

I second HBD on the kids' salon for Cozy if sitting still is a problem (which of course. I forgot how young she is). Both of my boys were HORRIBLE about haircuts when they were that age, and I took them to one of those places. I was always amazed at how those stylists could cut the hair of a moving target and have it turn out really cute.

It wasn't a matter of her just not sitting still - she was screaming and flailing. No one could have possibly cut that child's hair while she was in that state.  I'm going to try Hair-Do Zoo for both of the kids, I think. I once proclaimed these types of establishments to be unnecessary, but that was before Cozy was around. She has proven me wrong on so many counts, so I'll just add this one to the list!

I feel for you.  Moose screams like someone's trying to murder him every time he gets his hair cut, which is far less often than he really ought to because my eardrums, they bleed.  It's to the point that my mother-in-law can't do it anymore because she's afraid of cutting him.  The Engineer has to keep the boy in a headlock for the duration of the trimming.  No amount of distractions, bribes, or talking makes a difference, and he has the same wild, unruly hair that both my husband and I do.  Thank goodness the in-laws live out in the middle of nowhere with no neighbors to call the cops.

Good luck.  If you find a magic stop-screaming bean, please share with me.  I'll pay you in chocolate.  Also, I echo the "don't go back to the idiot with the mouth" consensus.  No reason to be filling your kid's head with his crap.

The appointment at Hair-Do Zoo has been made. Wish me luck! (I'm going to bring a really big bag of animal crackers.)

Good luck! I used to have to hold my boys on my lap and restrain their arms while they screamed bloody murder and the stylists still ended up giving them nice haircuts, so don't despair.

Do you have a phone or something they could watch a little movie on or play a game while a quick trim is performed?
